Forfeited Intelligence – Bhagavad Gita

“O Janārdana, the intelligence of Duryodhana and others has been polluted by greed to attain the kingdom. Thus, they are unable to conceive of the lawlessness that arises from destroying the dynasty or the sin incurred by betraying their friends. Why then should we, who have such knowledge, engage in such improper acts as these?”
Arjuna said, “I am not greedy for a palace, opulence, and sovereignty of the world at the cost of killing all my relatives. I would definitely fall into the darkest regions of hell by killing all my kin. This body is given by God—all the bodies of the living entities are given by God. If I take these away from them independently, this is a great sin. Their souls will curse me, and God as well.” Arjuna thought like this.
Duryodhana was very greedy for the kingdom, therefore he did not understand how this war was sinful or bad for him. “Just because he doesn’t think this is sinful, why should I follow his actions?” Arjuna asked.
In Hindi it is told—Guru se kapat mitra se vair ye andha ye khora—If one cheats his Guru or has hatred for his friends, he will become blind or a leper.
Arjuna said, “I will not treat my friends or Guru badly. They helped me from my childhood, taught and protected me. Now they are against me, but I cannot kill them. This is not good for me.”
The Kūrma Purāṇa states:
upādhyāyaḥ pitā jyeṣṭha-bhrātā caiva mahī-patiḥ
mātulaḥ śvasuras trātā mātāmaha-pitāmahau
bandhur jyeṣṭhaḥ pitṛvyaś ca puṁśyete guravaḥ smṛtāḥ
“He who instructs the Vedas, the father, elder brother, king, maternal uncle, father-in-law, protector, maternal grandparents, paternal grandparents, relatives and those who are elderly all are considered one’s gurus.”
He only received this family relationship after he was born into that particular body. He did not realize that sanātana-dharma is eternal, beyond the purview of one lifetime. If anyone gives up sanātana-dharma or does not follow the principles of its line, they are not one’s friend, Guru, Ācārya or relative. If they are related with sanātana-dharma, then are they are my friend, otherwise they are my enemies. Arjuna lost this discrimination, therefore he thought, “This is bad for me.” In reality however, sanātana-dharma is good, not bad.
Kṛṣṇa tried to tell him this, but Arjuna would not hear it, rather, he offered his own ideas and conceptions to Kṛṣṇa one after the other.
Arjuna thought, “My conception is correct and truthful. Kṛṣṇa should also accept it.” Why was Arjuna speaking like this to Kṛṣṇa? Kṛṣṇa had not asked him to do anything at that point.
If anyone loses his brain, becoming completely crazy, seeing someone in front of him he thinks, “This person is not helpful for me, I will tell him my conception and change him.” Arjuna even wanted to change Kṛṣṇa, and make Him follow his own advice and conception. He wanted Kṛṣṇa to speak favorably according to his own desire, he did not seek to know who Kṛṣṇa really was.
If anyone takes up bad association, his intelligence will be lost or defeated by that wicked company. Then, similar to how crazy people always think they are truthful and speak the truth, and they want all others to hear them and follow their desires, intending to be helpful to them, Arjuna did not realize that if anyone does not follow sanātana-dharma or any rules and regulations they are foolish and crazy. Because of his attachment to them, Arjuna also became deluded by their misconceptions, thus he spoke to Kṛṣṇa so many things. He said, “You are Govinda, you are Madhusudana, You are Janārdana.”
Janārdana means that if anyone performs evil acts, He is the one who rectifies and punishes them. He is Govinda. Many demons came to Vraja-maṇḍala and Govinda killed them all.
Arjuna is implying, “You have so much love for the Vrajavāsīs who are Your family members, why then are you ordering me to kill these people? You never killed Your grandfather or gurus, so why are You ordering me to do this?”
Arjuna had this questioning, challenging mood towards Kṛṣṇa. One should never fight with a priest or Ācārya, a guest, child, old man or woman, orphan, doctor, relative, mother, sister, brother, son, wife, daughter or a servant. This is the rule of Scripture. Now, Arjuna was trying to teach Kṛṣṇa or instruct Him. He did not know that the body and mind are relative, and not absolute truth in themselves. Yet if all those people go against sanātana-dharma, then Scripture instructs one to neglect them.
mātrā svasrā duhitrā vā
nāviviktāsano bhavet
balavān indriya-grāmo
vidvāḿsam api karṣati
Srimad Bhagavatam 9.19.17
“One should not allow oneself to sit on the same seat even with one’s own mother, sister or daughter, for the senses are so strong that even though one is very advanced in knowledge, he may be attracted by lusty desires.”
They should be respected, but not brought into close proximity, because the senses are very strong and uncontrolled. The senses and nature always act against one. Arjuna did not realize this.

  • SRILA GURUDEVA'S DIVINE APPEARANCE FEB. 7 1921

Śrīla Gurudeva’s parents went to the Gaṅgā everyday with a saṅkīrtana (congregational singing) party. After bathing, they returned home, applied tīlaka (sacred clay) on their bodies and worshipped the Lord. On the day of Śiva-rātrī in the early spring, Paṇḍita Tiwārī and Lakṣmī-devī served Bhagavān throughout the day and stayed awake all night to worship Śiva. They prayed to Śiva that they would be blessed with a son who was a great devotee of Kṛṣṇa. On Śiva-rātrī, the custom is to stay awake and perform worship four times: from six to nine in the evening, nine to twelve, twelve to three and, finally, three to six in the morning. Pleased by such worship, Śiva will fulfill all desires of the worshiper. Paṇḍita Tāiwrī and Lakṣmī-devī sat in the Śiva temple and recited the Bhagavad-gītā and Rāmāyaṇa. Next, they performed a fire ceremony and then bathed the Śiva-liṅga. They prayed to Śiva, “By your mercy, may the nativity of a great devotee of Bhagavān Kṛṣṇa take place in our family.” They thought, “Many devotees of Śrī Rāma are in our family, now would be a great blessing upon us if a devotee of Śrī Kṛṣṇa appears. Having a son who has pure love for Kṛṣṇa would enable us to always hear Kṛṣṇa’s glories in his saintly company.”
After Paṇḍita Tiwārī and Lakṣmī-devī concluded their prayers and worship in the early morning, they dozed off and had a vision. Thousands of effulgent devotees were singing the holy names of the Lord while dancing in ecstasy. They had glowing golden complexions and long arms, which they held high in the air as they danced along. As they approached the Tiwārīs’ home, Paṇḍajī and Lakṣmī-devī gazed at the divine personalities and thought, “We usually have kīrtana here in the evening. How is it that this kīrtana is happening in the morning?” As the congregation approached the house, the dancing and singing increased in fervor. One of the divine beings came forward and, with a sweet smile on his face, entered the hearts of Paṇḍita Tāiwrī and Lakṣmī-devī. They awoke suddenly, imbued with joy and attraction towards the divine being they had just envisioned. From that day onward, Paṇḍita Tāiwrī and Lakṣmī-devī always remembered the personality in their dream.
In due course, Lakṣmī-devī prepared a suitable maternity room in preparation of childbirth. On February 6, 1921, the Tiwārī’s family guru, a brāhmaṇa named Paṇḍita Miśra, who was initiated in the Rāmānuja-sampradāya, visited their home from his village of Majariya-gaon. Paṇḍita Tāiwrī welcomed his guru, offered obeisance, gave him a seat, and washed his feet. After speaking together for some time, Paṇḍajī offered his guru some prasāda (pure foodstuffs offered to God) and a place to rest for the night. In the early morning, Lakṣmī-devī went into labor. She rushed to the household maternity room and, with little pain or difficulty, gave birth to a beautiful boy. It was a few minutes past four in the morning, on maunī-amāvasyā, February 7, on the junction between the auspicious Vedic months of Puṣyā and Māgha.
The family guru had already awoken and gone to the Gaṅgā. Upon returning, he heard a boy had just been born and went immediately to bless the infant. Many sādhus were residing at the Tāiwrīs’ household, observing vows of silence on the day Lord Śiva was petitioned to arise from his meditation. But when they caught sight of the effulgent baby boy, they gathered and began to spontaneously sing in loud voices, “Śrīman Nārāyaṇa Nārāyaṇa Hari Hari, Śrīman Nārāyaṇa Nārāyaṇa Hari Hari!” The sweet sound of the holy names filled the atmosphere in affectionate welcome of Śrī Hari’s beloved devotee.
The family guru, Paṇḍa Miśra, examined the infant and saw he had remarkable blue eyes, a golden complexion, and a wide forehead adorned with a distinct mark of tīlaka, the sign of a devotee of Lord Viṣṇu. The auspicious signs of a jug, lotus, flag, and urdhvā-rekhā
(a line signifying an exalted soul) were on the boy’s feet, and there were ten cakras (auspicious lines forming the ape of a disc) on his fingertips. Observing all these markings, Paṇḍita Miśra told Paṇḍita Tiwārī, “You are extremely fortunate! This boy is not from your small village. He is a great devotee of God. I will draw up his birth
    chart immediately.”
Upon the birth of the boy, Paṇḍajī and Lakṣmī-devī realized their son must be the same personality who had previously visited their dream. They rejoiced, “Now a saint has appeared in our home!” All the guests were pleased and said they had never seen such an amazing boy.
After compiling the chart, Paṇḍita Miśra discussed with the Tiwārīs what to name their child. They decided to give him the name Śrīman Nārāyaṇa. Since their son was born on maunī-amāvasyā, the Tiwārīs felt that Śiva had blessed them with a special child. His grandmother Dulāri-devī said, “He is peaceful and does not cry. So we will give him the nickname Bholānātha.” Bholānātha is a name of Śiva meaning
    “the simple-hearted Lord.”
Paṇḍita Miśra then explained to Paṇḍajī and Lakṣmī-devī, “Your son has an auspicious chart. It shows that he will be a Cakravartī Mahārāja.” “Cakra” denotes a wheel, and “varta” its hub. Therefore, Cakravartī is one whom society will revolve around and, since he has conquered all directions, he is uncommonly distinguished. Paṇḍita Miśra concluded to Paṇḍita Tiwārī and Lakṣmī-devī, “Your son will travel the world to liberate souls from the bondage of māyā by leading them on the path of bhakti.”
It is said in the Rāma-carita-mānasa by Tulasī dāsa: honahāra vīravān ke hote haiṅ cikne paṭ—as the leaves of a sapling indicate how tall and powerful a tree will become, one’s character in childhood sheds light upon his future.
Before he could even roll over, Śrīman Nārāyaṇa (henceforward referred to as Śrīla Gurudeva or Gurudeva) would lie in his mother’s arms and listen to recitations of Rāmāyaṇa. When he was six months old, he would merrily ride on the shoulders of his father or grandfather to religious discourses. If they tried to leave before the lectures had finished, he cried loudly until they decided to stay. As a child, Śrīla Gurudeva sat in rapt attention for the entire duration of hari-kathā and never showed signs of hunger or thirst. When he appeared amongst the congregation, the atmosphere became surcharged by his presence, and anyone who caught sight of him was immediately filled with jubilation.
When Śrīla Gurudeva was about seven months, his parents noticed that if they tried to bathe him with ordinary water the gentle child would whimper and refuse to touch it. However, when they bathed him in water collected from the nearby Gaṅgā, he would be satisfied and joyous. He was exceedingly stubborn and would not eat a morsel, no matter how tempting, unless was prasāda and only after the family gave him caraṇāmṛta (water that has bathed the Diety), from their morning worship of Lakṣmī-Nārāyaṇa and Śālagrāma.
As soon as his son learned to talk, Paṇḍita Tiwārī would place him on his lap and teach him verses of the Bhagavad-gītā, just as a young boy learns the alphabet from a teacher. He lovingly advised his son, “By memorizing the Gītā, Kṛṣṇa will be seated within your heart. Kṛṣṇa’s advice is His mahā-prasāda (great mercy). One who wants to make his life successful will read the Bhagavad-gītā and preserve the verses in his mind. Wherever there is respect for Kṛṣṇa and His holy speech, there will be no place for misery, sickness, or illusion. Carefully keep these verses in your heart and thus protect our family line.” (see more)

  • Srila Gurudeva on: "HOW TO BALANCE ONE'S DAY"

Śrīla Gurudeva held a special discussion. He gave strong instructions on how to balance one’s day: a balance of sādhana-bhajana and temple services, a balance of sādhana-bhajana and preaching activities, a balance of sādhana-bhajana and family responsibilities, and a balance of sādhana-bhajana and earning money. Gurudeva began by saying that those who are not demons but are not doing bhajana are like very ignorant donkeys, kicked by the hind legs of the she-donkeys and taking all the burden of the washerman. In Holland, Śrīla Gurudeva said: “Persons favorable to devotion are of two kinds, and those who are not following the process, the rules of devotees and devotion, are greater in number. Real devotees are few, and even among that small number there are many divisions. Most are initiated by unqualified, false gurus, and even those with bona fide gurus are of many types. Some think, ‘My fire sacrifice has been performed and I have a sacred thread; therefore I am initiated.’ Such persons wear big tilaka, but there is no dīkṣā in the true sense, and they are continuing their unfavorable or sinful activities. They are greater in number, and we may be also in this category. There is no thick relationship with Kṛṣṇa and no real knowledge of tattva—not of jīva-tattva, bhagavata-tattva, guru-tattva, māyā tattva, or prema-tattva. Even if they remember a mantra like ‘aiṁ guruve namaḥ,’ their minds are elsewhere. After ten minutes they think, ‘What am I doing?’ They were sleeping or just drifting off. Then, while chanting, ‘klīm caitanyāya vidmahe,’ the mind is absent for half an hour. Most of us are in this category of struggle.”Śrīla Gurudeva continued: “Worldly affairs come, our job or the like, and we are always very careful and cautious in these affairs. The mind is always there—in computers and here and there—and not in the guru-gayatri and the Hare Kṛṣṇa mahāmantra. A pure devotee comes and inspires them, but as soon as he leaves—nothing is in there. Such persons numbers are greater. Others cannot follow ‘tṛṇad api sunīcena’ or even Srila Rūpa Gosvāmī’s instructions in Upadeśāmṛta: ‘vāco vegaṁ manasaḥ krodha-vegaṁ.’ Some wear neck beads of only one strand, which do not even touch the neck. Even in the military there are some rules and etiquette, and the soldiers are punished if they do not follow them. If we cannot follow these things, how can we follow vraja-prema? Caitanya Mahāprabhu and His associates were all paramahaṁsas, but they all followed Vaiṣṇava etiquette. If we follow their rules and regulations, a taste will come. In school there is daily reading and requirements completing the tasks given by the teacher. First, vāco vegaṁ: control your tongue. The today, ‘I will not quarrel with my wife or husband, children, Gurudeva, and other devotees.’ Without this you cannot control your anger. Don’t take rich foodstuffs. The fault of overeating is not only the fault of the tongue. All five senses are guilty, including the eyes. Looking brings attachment. Don’t try to be astrologers, and don’t read books other than bhakti books. There is no harm if you have not studied in school and colleges. By chanting, remembering, and serving Gurudeva you will be happy. Nothing else will make you happy.“Don’t criticize all the Kaṁsas and Jarasandas. Spend your time in always glorifying Nanda, Yaśodā, the gopas, gopīs, Kṛṣṇa, and the devotees. Don’t care much for your life’s maintenance. A lower-class devotee can do so, but when you are mature, you have nothing to do in this regard. What you need will easily come. Don’t talk prajalpa. Chant one lākha of holy names daily. If this is not possible, then chant fifty-thousand names. If not, then thirty-two rounds. If not, then go to the ocean and at once jump in. You should certainly go to the Pacific or Atlantic Ocean. Chant, but if your bona fide guru has come to give a lecture, then go and hear. Then your chanting will become high-class. Be confident that by doing all this, surely kṛṣṇa-prema will come. First finish these things, then do anything to maintain your life. The holy name will arrange everything for you.“Don’t associate with friends or family members if they are not devotees. They are all cheaters. If you are ugly, with two or three children, your husband will reject you and take a new wife. So, give up all your other jobs and come to śaraṇāgati—full surrender to Kṛṣṇa.”Some of the hundreds of devotees present were meeting Śrīla Gurudeva for the first time, and some had been waiting since the year before, counting the seconds. Some, although meeting with him in one or two countries each year, for the past three, four, or five years, were just now realizing the magnitude of their fortune in getting the most rare and precious association of such a high-class pure Vaiṣṇava from Vraja. Many within the various categories of devotees were now in the process of changing all their priories in life and were preparing to leave their money and position to remain with Śrīla Gurudeva. Holland was the first place of Śrīla Gurudeva’s preaching in the West. He was now fond of calling it “Holyland.” It was in Holland that he first initiated disciples outside of India. By now he had thousands of disciples in the West, and thus far this year’s tour had already made another three hundred fortunate in this way.

  • IS IT OK TO CHANT RADHA NAMA?

O brother, simply by chanting the names of Kṛṣṇa, one can receive the lotus feet of Rādhikā, and by chanting the names of Rādhikā, one can receive the lotus feet of Kṛṣṇa. Thus, I have briefly explained everything by which you will be relieved from the pains of your heart. All other topics are full of miseries and dualities. Txt.1
Śrīla Rūpa Gosvāmī writes in the Nāmaṣṭaka, “Nārada muni bājāya vīṇā rādhikā-ramaṇa name_Nārada Muni plays his vīṇā, singing the names of Śrī Rādhikā-Ramaṇa.”
    nārada-vīṇojjīvana! sudhormi-niryāsa-mādhurī-pūra!
tvaṁ kṛṣṇa-nāma! kāmaṁ sphura me rasane rasena sadā
O life of Nārada’s vīṇā! You are the exhilarating waves on the transcendental ocean of nectar! O condensed form of all sweetness! O holy name of Kṛṣṇa! By Your own sweet will, may You eternally dance on my tongue, along with all transcendental rasa.
Before, Nārada Muni chanted God’s holy name. But once Kṛṣṇa appeared in Vṛndāvana, Nārada understood that Kṛṣṇa can never leave His svarūpa-śakti, and he must receive Her mercy; therefore, Śrīmatī Rādhārānī must also have appeared nearby. Nārada came to Vṛṣabhānupura for Śrīmatī Rādhārānī’s darśana, but Vṛṣabhānu Mahārāja was hiding Her. Nārada Ṛṣi’s desire to have darśana of svarūpa-śakti was very strong, so somehow he convinced Vṛṣabhānu Mahārāja to give Her darśana. He requested Vṛṣabhānu Mahārāja to bring the necessary paraphernalia to perform a blessing ceremony. Once Vṛṣabhānu Mahārāja had left the room, Nārada Ṛṣi offered sāṣṭāṅga-praṇāma and performed parikramā of Śrīmatī Rādhikā. She gave Nārada Ṛṣi Her darśana and mercy and instructed him to go to the foot of Girirāja Govardhan and there to wait at Nārada Kuṇḍa. She told him to wait there and soon he would understand and witness everything. From that time on Nārada began chanting Rādhā’s holy name. He thought, “I have chanted Kṛṣṇa’s name for millions of years, and now this chanting has produced the fruit of rādhā-nāma.” By chanting kṛṣṇa-nāma, His causeless mercy will manifest as a taste for chanting the name of Rādhā. For that person who chants Her name, Kṛṣṇa will arrange a place in sevā-kuñja with Rādhikā and the mañjarīs. The sādhaka will learn there to serve Her lotus feet. Therefore it should be understood that if one continuously chants kṛṣṇa-nāma, the result will be the blessing of service to Rādhā’s feet. When one chants rādhā-nāma, all of Kṛṣṇa’s nāma, rūpa, guṇa, līlā and mādhurya-mayī sevā will manifest in his heart. Chanting of Kṛṣṇa’s name alone is the same as brahma-upāsanā or the worship of impersonal Brahma. Brahma is not Parameśvara, the Supreme Lord or avatārī, the source of all incarnations. If the Lord is without svarūpa-śakti then He is śakti-hīna or devoid of all power; He is only Brahma. The name Kṛṣṇa implies that He is present with His svarūpa-śakti. Then He is complete and happy. Similarly if someone is not taking shelter at svarūpa-śaktis’ feet, then Kṛṣṇa will never be happy with that person. Kṛṣṇa Himself does ārādhana of Śrīmatī Rādhārānī and also teaches everyone rādhā-upāsanā.

  • Lamentation – Bhagavad Gita

“Even if the fully-armed sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra were to kill me unarmed and unresisting on the battlefield, that would be more auspicious for me.” Arjuna said, “I will not fight. The sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra may come and kill me and I will not resist. I would rather give up my life than fight.” Arjuna was prepared to leave the world. He had the great fortune to be with Kṛṣṇa as His dear friend, but now he has become very weak, devoid of strength and intelligence. Why was his position like this? There is only one reason. He was considering his grandfather, Dhṛtarāṣṭra, Krpacarya, Droṇācārya, the brothers of Duryodhana and the young wives of the Kauravas. They would all become widows; their husbands dead. This was such a large family of the Kauravas standing opposed to the Pandavas…
