God is the Whole Thing

Srila Gurudeva: Krsna sends those who are realized to this world from time to time to give this transcendental knowledge to all that we are part and parcel of Godhead. God has a form and we also have a form, a spiritual form. We want happiness, and we should know that Krsna is the embodiment of happiness and we are a part of that. We should realize this. Anyone may say, “God has no form because we cannot see Him. Therefore the soul also has no form.” But it has been written everywhere, even in the Bible, “God created man after His own image.” God created man after His own image. If God has no form, then how did He create man like Him? Also in the Koran it is written, “innalaha khalaka men suratahi.” This means that Khoda created man as his own beautiful form was. So Khoda, Allah created man like His own self. So in the Koran also it is written like this.

If God has no form, then from where did this world come with so many forms? From nothing, anything cannot come. From nothing, something or what to speak of everything cannot come, so must be there something. Not only something, but God is the whole thing and the origin of the entire cosmic manifestation. Therefore He has form. If there is nothing, then it seems that God is not so powerful. It may seem that He cannot manifest Himself in this world and that He is so weak. But it is written everywhere that God is powerful. There are so many forms in Him and from Him, this entire world with all these forms have come. So God has form and we have also form, but these forms are transcendental. Krsna is now coming to this point:

yoga-sthah kuru karmani
sangam tyaktva dhananjaya
siddhy-asiddhyoh samo bhutva
samatvam yoga ucyate

Bhagavad-Gita 2.48
[O Dhananjaya, in a devotional mood, give up attachment to the fruits of karma, perform your prescribed duties and become equipoised in success and failure. Such equanimity is called yoga.]

Krsna is saying, “You should adopt yoga. Why? So you can understand all these things.” Why are we deviated from God? We want to be with him. So, there are two things: the souls and God. We want that we should meet with God because without meeting Him, we cannot be happy. If you are put in jail and you are quite alone for years and years, then you may die. But if there is another person there who is talking with you very lovingly and you are eating together and enjoying yourselves, talking very lovingly between each other, then both of you can be alive. But if you are put in jail and no one is there, if you are all alone, then you may die.

[Spoken by Srila Gurudeva on December 18th, 1998, Bali, published as part of the Bhakta Bandhav Anthology, Volume 24]
