Therefore Bhīṣma sat silently, waiting to witness the will of God. Duryodhana’s only intention was to enjoy Draupadī. He wanted to make her the object of his enjoyment. The results of this would cause great misfortune to him and his dynasty. When talk again resumed to return the Pāṇḍavas kingdom, he said, “Never! Without fighting, without being defeated in war we will not give anything.” He wanted that the entire Earth be his own and that all objects be for his enjoyment. When this degree of selfishness surrounds living entities and attacks them – when they are unsatisfied in their kāma or selfish desires, then anger arises within them. When there is an obstacle in the acquirement of objects to satisfy one’s lusty desires, anger comes…

If anyone accepts the side of adharma, they should not be respected or revered. This is a big test. On one side, there are so-called respected personalities, but they are against dharma, and on the other side there are the true followers of dharma. On one side, there are the senses, body and mind; they give many instructions telling one to serve and worship them. One cannot tolerate neglecting their desires. If he tries, he becomes angry having not fulfilled the lusty desires of the senses and mind. When hungry or lusty one cannot tolerate it. Meanwhile, everyone is standing by ready to enjoy and calling, “Come and enjoy with me.” Everywhere he looks, there are objects waiting to be enjoyed, sumptuous dishes and enchanting women. What can one do? If the sādhaka goes to the side of māyā leaving dharma, then he will be lost. This is a very dangerous position. Māyā prepares everything and places it in front of us as gifts and tests, “What is your choice…?”

Now Arjuna was silent; devoid of all strength. When do people lose their strength? Guru-pāda-padma and the Ācāryas teach us that intelligence is given by God. When we use our intelligence against God and our mentality goes against dharma, then we will lose everything. Our strength, our brain will stop working. Arjuna has now transferred himself near to crazy, mental people and material enjoyers. He was absorbed in thoughts about them and their welfare. Externally, he was with Kṛṣṇa, but he did not follow Kṛṣṇa. He empathetically left Kṛṣṇa, and went over to the Kauravas. The Vrajavāsīs, Vraja-devīs may remain in their houses and buildings, but they always think of Kṛṣṇa. Kṛṣṇa thinks of them as well, and therefore they are always strong. When Kṛṣṇa played on His flute, the gopīs immediately left everything and ran to Him. However, Arjuna was with Kṛṣṇa, yet not with Kṛṣṇa in reality.
