Uddhava thought, “Nanda Bābā is crying in separation from Kṛṣṇa. How I can tell him to not cry? Kṛṣṇa told me to pacify the Vrajavāsīs, but how can I pacify them? Should I tell Nanda Bābā, ‘You should continue crying. This is the fruit of your birth—to cry for Kṛṣṇa. To be continuously absorbed in remembrance of Kṛṣṇa is one’s greatest fortune.’ Nanda Bābā is doing this. What should I tell him? Should I tell him, ‘Don’t cry,’ or should I tell him to continue crying?”
