[Spoken by Srila Gurudeva on January 17th, 1998, Australia, published as part of the Bhakta Bandhav Anthology, Volume 23]
Srila Gurudeva: What is the real reason Caitanya Mahaprabhu came to this world?
sri-caitanya-mano-‘bhistam sthapitam yena bhu-tale
svayam rupah kada mahyam dadati sva-padantikam
-Prema-bhakti-candrika
[When will Sri Rupa Gosvami give me the shelter of his lotus feet? Because he understood the innermost desire of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, he was able to establish His mission in this world and is very dear to the Lord.]
Rupa Gosvami actually fulfilled the inner desires of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu. How? By writing Bhakti-rasamrta-sindhu. If he had only done Bhakti-rasamrta-sindhu though, he could not have fulfilled the mano-bhista of Caitanya Mahaprabhu. He did it by writing Ujjvala-nilamani, Vidagdha Madhava, Lalita Madhava, Padyavali, and by all other books. Otherwise, the whole world would have been deprived of this krsna-prema. They would not have known who Srimati Radhika was, hladini-sakti mahabhava svarupa. Caitanya Mahaprabhu, mahabhava Rasaraja svarupa. Anyone would not have known this. What is Vrndavana, what is conjugal love, all would have been deprived of this. But they have written these things and given them to us. Svamiji has never come for only these things. He was in the line of Rupa Gosvami. He preached, but he also wanted to give this high class of prema to the whole world. He was in that line. He was not only in the line of Srila Advaita Acarya.
Caitanya Mahaprabhu has not come for only this. He has done these things, but who really did it? Maha-Visnu was there in His form and He did all these things. Then what did Caitanya Mahaprabhu do? Radhaya pranaya-mahima (Caitanya-caritamrta, Adi-lila 1.6). He also preached the holy name, but that name was full of krsna-prema. In the nama-sankirtana of Advaita Acarya, there was not so much krsna-prema. Only salvation was there, mukti was there. Only suffering and sorrow was taken away by that nama-kirtana. But anyone could not realize that highest type of prema. We should realize all these things. We have come for this thing. Not for making parties, “Oh, this is our party, this is another party, this is that party.” We have not come for this. We have come to help all in brotherhoodness. We are all in Caitanya Mahaprabhu’s family. Those who are doing bhajana, or even not doing bhajana, because all jivas are servants of Krsna, eternal servants of Krsna. We should realize this. Even trees and creepers and animals also. So why should we not try to realize all these things? I am not telling, but all our sastra, Caitanya-caritamrta, Srimad-Bhagavatam, all the books of the Gosvamis, all are telling like this.
