Srila Gurudeva: Any bhakta may be weeping. He is doing ‘muah’ and weeping. He is trembling, his hairs are standing, and he becomes faint. How is this bhakti? How will it be bhakti? Because he realizes Krsna in his heart and then becomes like this. So all sancari-bhavas are also uttama-bhakti. Understand what I want to say? If anyone is weeping but is not taking the name of Krsna, but they are weeping, then it is not bhakti. If any bhakta is, ‘nayanam galad-asru-dharaya vadanam gadgada-ruddhaya gira,’ how is it uttama-bhakti? Because due to chanting the name, from the remembrance of Krsna, this situation has come. So the sancari-bhavas are also uttama-bhakti. All, sancari, vyabhicari, all are like this. A bhakta is going, chanting and remembering. After some time he comes to a full stop, doing nothing, only silence. After that he begins crying bitterly. All general people will think that he is madman, “Why he is doing such nonsense?” But it is actually uttama-uttama-bhakti, more than uttama-bhakti. Because some impressions have come in his heart due to remembrance of Krsna’s pastimes and that is why he has become like so.

Srimad-Bhagavatam 11.2.4

[By chanting the holy name of the Supreme Lord, one comes to the stage of love of Godhead. Then the devotee is fixed in his vow as an eternal servant of the Lord, and he gradually becomes very much attached to a particular name and form of the Lord. As his heart melts with ecstatic love, he laughs very loudly or cries or shouts. Sometimes he sings and dances like a madman, for he is indifferent to public opinion.]

He is laughing like Nityananda Prabhu and going on the bank of the river and telling little girls, “Oh, will you marry me? I want to marry you.” This is bhakti? Sometimes he is laughing and taking the neck of deers and cows and is weeping bitterly. Where is bhakti to be found here? Because without bhakti, this cannot be. So all the symptoms bhava, vibhava, anubhava, sattvika, vyabhicari, all are symptoms of uttama-bhakti. Sometimes there are external symptoms and sometimes internal symptoms, but all are uttama-bhakti.
