Srila Gurudeva: Srila Prabhupada Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura also established brhat-mrdanga, the printing press, and he began to publish the books of Rupa Gosvami, Sanatana Gosvami, and others like Bhaktivinoda Thakura, Jiva Gosvami, Visvanatha Cakravarti Thakura, Narottama Thakura, and Gopala Bhatta Gosvami. He published Srimad-Bhagavatam, and also Caitanya-caritamrta. He established so many periodicals. There were three or four magazines in Bengali. Also the daily Nadiya Prakasa. Then Gaudiya. Then a bi-monthly and monthly Gaudiya. Then in Hindi, Bhagavata-patrika. In English, The Harmonist. Also there were periodicals in Sanskrit, in Assamiya, in Gujarati, in Oriya, in Madras, Tamil, Telugu, and in all the languages of India. He began to publish so many periodicals and thus he began to preach the mission of Caitanya Mahaprabhu and Rupa Gosvami very quickly.

He told the devotees, “You should not go and demand such a high price for these. Take only one or two paisa.” One paisa is a hundredth part of a rupee, that is a paisa. He told them, “You should collect in these boxes,” and the key was always with Prabhupada. But for the box of my Gurudeva, Prabhupada gave him the key because he trusted him so much. From beginning of the day and up till evening, they used to go everywhere and distribute these periodicals. In the tram, buses, markets, here and there. They used to speak some hari-katha and then take one or two paisa.

They were always so energetic and they never kept a single paisa for themselves. Paisa to paisa, they all used to give everything to Prabhupada. Nowadays, twenty-five percent goes to the head office, and seventy-five percent in my pocket. Like this, they will go to hell. Sometimes they used to take the entire amount, not giving a single farthing to the center. Thus they are all going to hell. So at that time, they used to be very bold.

[Spoken by Srila Gurudeva on December 7th, 1998, Malaysia, published as part of the Bhakta Bandhav Anthology, Volume 25]
