Srila Gurudeva: Why should we do kirtana? Why? Why? Kirtana is a process, but not only a process. If you are doing kirtana in a melodious tune and everybody is singing and praising you, “Very good, very good,” if it is only to collect honor for oneself, then the power of kirtana goes away. We should not do kirtana for any selfish reasons, especially for making money. We should especially not do kirtana to gather all kinds of honor from the audience. We should not do this. We should try to know the meaning of kirtana. Gauranga bolite ha’be pulaka sarira: “O Krsna, O Gurudeva, O Vaisnava Thakura, I want to weep when I am chanting your name.” But we are not weeping. Then what to do? Gauranga bolite ha’be pulaka sarira hari hari bolite nayane babe nira: “When I will chant, my heart will be melted. Tears will be coming, hair will be standing on end and our throat will be choked.”
In your life, you will realize this. We should chant and do kirtana like this, like a prayer. When will such a day come? It will come only by the mercy of Nityananda Prabhu or any guru manifested by Nityananda Prabhu. He is so merciful. He is Baladeva Prabhu. He will give bala, strength, and everything. He may inspire you. Then we will be like this. One day, we will be qualified for this. When we will chant, remember and sing this kirtana, not looking at anyone, but only praying, “O Krsna, O Gauracandra, O Nityananda Prabhu, come in my heart and help me.” If you are not pure, so many worldly desires and everything will be there and our hearts will not melt. They will never melt and our hairs will not stand on end. When Nityananda Prabhu will be merciful, causelessly merciful, He can help us.
Visaya chadiya kabe suddha habe mana: “O Nityananda Prabhu, You are merciful. Help me, help me.” All material desires should go away. But we cannot give them up, never. It is a very big problem for us. Any worldly person cannot help you with this. The help of any so-called guru cannot help you either. So-called devotees also cannot help you. Even sincere devotees cannot help you if they are not at that standard. He may be sincere, but he should be on that platform to purify your heart. Our hearts should really melt. If you are chanting and remembering and your heart is not melting, then it is not a good sign. We should try to weep for this. You are giving the energy to collect money and do so many things, to complete projects...so many projects are there. But there is no project or plan that, “Our hearts should be purified and they should melt when we chant.”
We want that our hearts should be melted forever. Without Nityananda’s mercy, we cannot achieve this.
