The 10 Offences to the Holy Names

The Loving Chastisement of Our Well-wishers

Once, there was a king who had a very qualified son. But one day the king strongly chastised the prince and, unable to tolerate this, the prince left his father’s kingdom. When the prince was outside the country, no one offered him any respect, and he ended up finding work as a menial servant in a hotel. The king was very worried for his son’s wellbeing and requested his minister to find his son and bring him back. The minister agreed, but told the king that it might take some time. He searched everywhere without success. Then finally, one day the minister saw the prince, who now appeared to be like an orphan boy, and he was working extremely hard in a hotel restaurant for merely a few scraps of leftovers. He had a very emaciated appearance and was covered with mosquito bites.

The minister approached the hotel manager, requesting a chance to do unpaid service. The manager agreed, and the minister started to serve the hotel and the prince, bringing him water, feeding him, and fanning him at night. Seeing the minister taking care of every detail, the prince wondered why he was helping him. After many months of serving, the minister had made a close friendship with the prince. One day the minister asked the boy where he was from, whereupon the prince started to weep bitterly. He told the minister that he was the son of a king, but due to his immense pride, he had left the palace and the kingdom after being chastised by his father. The minster suggested that the prince return, but the boy refused, saying that he wasn’t qualified. Finally, after a long time, the minister convinced the lost son to go back to the king.

We are all part of God’s family, but we have left Him. We have come to this world and become like orphans and refugees. When the minister returned with the prince, both the prince and the king were very happy.

We are all suffering like the prince, and Kṛṣṇa is worried for our condition. God wants you to be happy, and in order to show you how to be eternally happy, He sends His ministers, who are His empowered representatives. They come here and mercifully accept everyone, speak Kṛṣṇa’s glories to us, and give us love and blessings. They come and collect the jīvas that are willing to go to the transcendental world. We are very lucky to come in contact with these great personalities. Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu says that this is vidyā-vadhū-jīvanam. Kṛṣṇa’s messengers give us the nectar of bhakti-rasa, vraja-rasa and thus rejuvenate us. Then we gain relation with the lotus feet of the Vraja-devīs. Thus we become free from all disturbances and cease to rotate through the 8,400,000 species of life. Then very soon we will go to the transcendental realm and be happy forever.

Pure knowledge, which is called vadhū and vidyā, is our life and soul. Jīvanam is ādi-rasa, vraja-rasa, and prema-rasa. This love is everything. The fallen jīvas run to other living entities to find love and fulfillment in this world, but it is all dry like a desert. Genuine love is paravidya, transcendental knowledge. When this pure knowledge comes into the heart of the jīva, the jīva automatically goes to transcendental Vraja. But devoid of this knowledge, the jīva runs here and there like a madman. Possessing this pure knowledge, one is able to offer oneself to Kṛṣṇa’s lotus feet. This process of offering oneself however, does not mean to become a burden, rather, it means to be completely engaged in Śrī Guru and Kṛṣṇa’s service throughout our lifetime.

One day a Mullah went to a mosque and prayed, “Oh Allah, I have surrendered to you.” Then he prostrated himself on the floor and called out, “Oh Allah, please come and feed me! Oh Allah, please shelter and clothe me! Oh Allah, please relieve all my burdens!” This is not surrender. Real surrender means to be engaged twenty-four hours a day in sevā.

Raghunātha dāsa Gosvāmī would only rest for four daṇḍas (two hours and twenty-four minutes) a day, and while sleeping he would have darśana of Rādhā-Kṛṣṇa, and serve Them. This is real surrender. Yaśodā Mātā and the gopīs are completely surrendered. Complete surrender is called sarvātma-snapanaṁ.

  • WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO MAKE A RELATIONSHIP WITH VRAJA-RASA? (Part 1)

Krsna thought, “My sadhaka may engage in spiritual practice for many millions of lifetimes, and after that he may be able to achieve perfection by taking birth in Vraja or getting the qualification to stay in Vraja. However, if he does not make a relationship with Vraja-rasa and the Vrajavasis, then he will not be able to understand Me or come near Me…”

  • Utpanna Ekadasi

During this time, the nitya siddhas and sadhana siddhas went to the Rasa-lila. On the day of the full moon, Rasa Purnima, Krishna calls all the gopis to the Rasa-arena. Even small children who were two or three years of age became uncontrolled on hearing Krishna’s flute. They could not control themselves? Why?

Early in the morning, without any prior cause or invitation, Krishna would go to the houses of the gopis where the Sruticaris, Municaris, Rsicaris, Upanisadcaris, Mantracaris, Candogya, and all the perfected sadhakas took birth. Many of the sadhakas were from Treta Yuga. They chanted the Gopal-mantra and attained bhava-siddhi. Being Bhava-anukula, they took birth in Vraja-mandala by Gopal-mantra’s mercy. But, Gopal-mantra is not everything.

  • Disappearance day of Acarya Kesari

I met Srila Gurudeva for the first time at Devananda Gaudiya Math on this occasion in 1968. Many people were invited to attend the separation day. I met our Guru-varga at this viraha tithi for the first time. People from many different Gaudiya Maths were invited. I came there in 1968; I was twelve or thirteen. I saw how much love these sadhus had for their Gurudeva. They had renounced everything, but they did not renounce their Gurudeva and the Vaisnavas. In that viraha sabha, many acaryas were present like Pujyapada Bhakti Dayita Madhava Maharaja, Pujyapada Bhakti Raksaka Sridhara Maharaja, Pujyapada Bhakti Bhudeva Srauti Maharaja, Pujyapada Hrisikesa Maharaja, Pujyapada Janardhana Maharaja, and many other disciples of Prabhupada Sarasvati Thakura. They had heartfelt love and respect for their god-brother. Everyone had heartfelt love and deep respect for Param Gurudeva during the time of Prabhupada Sarasvati Thakura; their love for Param Gurudeva was undisturbed even after Prabhupada’s disappearance. We cannot define or understand such love. This is called a relationship. Their hearts are not hard like rocks. What do they do for their Guru-varga? Each acarya would offer puspanjali to Param Gurudeva and bitterly weep in separation. Some were elder and senior, but all of their hearts melted in separation from Param Gurudeva, and when they offered puspanjali, they showered everyone with the nectar of their separation-filled harikatha. They wept incessantly as they spoke. Thousands of disciples were there. The temple did not have any towers. There was only the ground floor, and the temple hall was small. There were not so many rooms. Everyone sat outside, like during Navadvipa Parikrama, or Vraja Mandala Parikrama. Everyone was there for the start of Kartika vrata.
We heard how Param Gurudeva was so close to Nayana-manjari, who had appeared as Varsabhanavi-devi dayita dasa in this world. He was very close to her in the spiritual world in his form as Vinoda-manjari. His service to his guru manifested in this world also. Through his immaculate service, he distributed the glories of Prabhupada, Nayana Mani-manjari to the conditioned souls.
Prabhupada gave him the name, “Vinoda Bihari.” He had a brother named Pramoda Bihari who later became Bhakti Kevala Audulomi Maharaja. Prabhupada said, “Unless someone meets with Vinoda, one cannot understand bhakti, bhajana, and Bhagavan. They will never realize eternal happiness. Whoever remembers Vinoda, and makes a relation with him can understand me. And they will never have any problem in life.”
Prabhupada would look to see who respected Vinoda. Ordinary people complained against Param Gurudeva to Prabhupada. They said, “He wears a Santipura dhoti and turban, and rides on a big horse, and he spends so much money. He does not wear tilaka, and he never has his mala or does bhajana. He leaves in the morning and returns at night. He does not follow any rules and regulations of bhakti.”
Prabhupada replied, “A person who follows all good etiquette but has no love only performs karma. This is external.”
People come to perform their duty, but they have no love. After they finish their duty, they return to their loved ones. Another person does not follow the rules and regulation externally, but he has love in his heart, and he has a heart to heart relation and connection with his spiritual master; this love is spotless and unbreakable.
Relationships are comprised of love. For instance, a servant in a palace works from morning to evening, while the prince does not do anything. If the servant has a little fault, he gets suspended or punished. The king’s son may break all regulations, and may destroy many things in the palace, but the king has love for his son, and does not punish him; he overlooks his faults.

  • WHY DID KRSNA TEST AND TEASE THE GOPIS SEARCHING FOR HIM AFTER THE RASA DANCE?

Srila Visvanatha Cakravarti Thakura explains in the purport of this verse in his Sarartha Darsini commentary. He says this was the process for preparing for rasa. Krsna has manifested the place of rasa-lila in Vraja and He wanted to give the gopis this transcendental nectar. He wants to make them qualified, pure and related to the nitya-siddha Gopis…

How to Recognize Someone as a Bona Fide Spiritual Master?

We don’t have to make disciples, we have to become disciples. In other words, we have to remain constantly engaged in the service of Krishna and the spiritual master. The devotees of Vishnu, the Vaishnavas, see the guru in all things. If one becomes proud of being a Vaishnava, then one’s service to Vishnu and the Vaishnavas evaporates. One who is free from the sense that he is the doer, who thinks, “I actually do nothing myself, it is Krishna alone who engages me in all activities.” And who is constantly engaged in the service of the Lord, can actually do something beneficial for the ordinary soul by turning them toward Krishna. But it is not enough to make phoney speeches about how you are not the doer. You have to genuinely feel that you are being made to act by the Lord.
