The Holy Name Alone Can Save You

Śrīla Nārāyaṇa Gosvāmī Mahārāja: After some days you will become old, at which time all your beauty and power will disappear. after that you will have to pass on from this world, and at that time you will not be able to take a single farthing with you. Moreover, your relatives, sons, daughters, wives, and husbands will not be able to go with you.

Śrī Kṛṣṇa has mercifully given you this human body for the sole purpose of chanting His names and remembering Him. It is only in this form that you can know, by the association of a special Vaiṣṇava guru, that you are transcendental jīvas, His maidservants (nitya-sakhīs). Being refugees in this world, you will have to give up these human bodies, taking nothing with you. You will be penniless. Neither your wealth, nor your reputation, nor anything else will be of any use when you pass from this world. Therefore, chant and remember Kṛṣṇa.

Viṣṇu dāsa: Can you give him blessings? His health is not good.

Śrīla Nārāyaṇa Gosvāmī Mahārāja: He should take proper medicine; especially Indian Ayurvedic medicine will help him. I went to see a very highly qualified Ayurvedic doctor in India. He gave me medicine, and now I am feeling much better. Indian Ayurvedic doctors are expert, especially South Indian doctors. There are so many such doctors in Bombay, Puna, and elsewhere.

[To Sachin] How many rounds are you chanting?

Sachin: I chant one round daily.

Śrīla Nārāyaṇa Gosvāmī Mahārāja: Within the twenty-four hours of a day you cannot find the time to chant more rounds? The holy name alone can save you. Your knowledge, wealth, mother, and father cannot save you. So, chant more. Now you are intelligent; you are going to college.

Viṣṇu dāsa: He goes to Rice University. I also attended school there.

Śrīla Nārāyaṇa Gosvāmī Mahārāja: Oh, a top university.

Viṣṇu dāsa: So Gurudeva, how do we ourselves increase our taste for chanting so that we will want to chant more and more?

Śrīla Nārāyaṇa Gosvāmī Mahārāja: We have only one energy; energy means money or any service. If we use that energy to please Kṛṣṇa and His dear devotees, doing something for them – even giving them a glass of water – sukṛti will come and then a taste for chanting will come. Sādhu-saṅga, sādhu-saṅga, sādhu-saṅga.

Only by the association of elevated, rasika-tattva-jña Vaiṣṇavas can we develop taste (ruci).

Vimalā dāsī: Śrīla Gurudeva, does transcendental greed come from sukṛti or by the mercy of guru?

Śrīla Nārāyaṇa Gosvāmī Mahārāja: Sukṛti and the mercy of guru are the same, in the sense that by sukṛti one attains the mercy of devotees and by the mercy of devotees one develops greed.

Viṣṇu dāsa: Śrī guru’s physical association and his instructions are the same. At the same time, when we are sitting in front of you, our minds are completely focused and peaceful and spiritualized; whereas when we are reading, our minds wander here and there.

Śrīla Nārāyaṇa Gosvāmī Mahārāja: Vāṇī (instructions) and vapu (physical presence) are the same. However, if you follow śrī guru’s instructions, you will be attracted to Kṛṣṇa very quickly. So try to follow his words. Association means ‘to follow him,’ not ‘to physically be with him.’ It does not matter whether or not you are physically with him. If you follow his instructions, there will be an effect.

Cāru-candrikā dāsī: In Jaiva-dharma, Śrīla Bhaktivinoda Ṭhākura says that the sandhinī-śakti manifests the bodies of Rādhā, Kṛṣṇa, the gopīs, gopas, etc. How is it possible for the sandhinī-śakti to manifest the bodies of Śrīmatī Rādhārāṇī and the gopīs?

Śrīla Nārāyaṇa Gosvāmī Mahārāja: As you know, although Yogamāyā is the power of Kṛṣṇa, she controls Kṛṣṇa. How is this possible? Śrī Kṛṣṇa has made her in such a way that she can cover His own knowledge regarding His godhood and aiśvarya (opulence). She is the power of Kṛṣṇa, and He has empowered her to do this.

Cāru-candrikā dāsī: So Śrī Kṛṣṇa has empowered the sandhinī-śakti to manifest the bodies of all these personalities?

Śrīla Nārāyaṇa Gosvāmī Mahārāja: Yes.
