The Glories of Sri Purusottama Month by Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura

Many episodes from the Puranas are narrated in the context of the glories of Purusottama month. One such example is Draupadi. In her previous life, she was the daughter of Medha Rsi. Even after hearing of the glories of Purusottama month from Durvasa Rsi, she neglected to observe that month...

Siva-ratri

Srila Gurudeva followed Siva-ratri. There was so much fighting about this in the matha even in Mathura, where Srila Gurudeva was in charge. His Godbrothers would become upset. I would cook on Siva-ratri, but they wanted there to be rice, dal, sabji and everything. They would not accept Srila Gurudeva’s idea and they complained about his following of vrata on that day.Srila Gurudeva said to them, “Who is Siva? Do you accept Siva as separate from Visnu? That is a nama-aparadha. Sada Siva is directly Lord Visnu’s expansion. However, if you accept Siva as equal to Visnu, this is also nama-aparadha. If you accept Siva as an independent controller than this is aparadha, but at the same time, he is not separate from Visnu. In the Brahma Samhita, it is stated:ksiram yatha dadhi-vikara-visesa-yogatsanjayate na hi tatah prthag asti hetohyah sambhutam api tatha samupaiti karyadgovindam adi-purusam tam aham bhajami“Here it is described that, milk turns into yogurt by a transforming agent, but yogurt cannot again become milk. In the same way, Lord Visnu manifest as Lord Siva to perform a specific function. So he is an expansion of Lord Visnu, but Siva he is not equal to Visnu and he cannot become Visnu just like milk can become yogurt but yogurt cannot become milk. It is a great offense to disrespect Lord Siva and one should certainly perform fast on his day of Siva-ratri.”Srila Gurudeva had to deal with so much disturbance amongst his Godbrothers over this matter. These Godbrothers, of course, did not include Srila Vamana Gosvami Maharaja and Srila Trivikram Gosvami Maharaja, but a collection of people who were not so serious about performing bhajana.Srila Gurudeva later wrote a book titled Siva-tattva and he had it distributed freely to different mathas. He said, “By disrespecting the different demigods one commits nama-aparadha and invites calamity. If one makes this offence he will never attain pure bhakti. Those people who offend Lord Siva will surely suffer. Just look at what happened to Daksa-prajapati, and look at what happened to Pusa and Brghu. Pusa’s teeth were shattered and Bhrgu’s mustache was ripped off. Daksa’s head was replaced with the head of a goat!

Mohini Ekadasi

On this Ekadasi-day, if a person desiring to serve God follows bhakti’s rules, then it will not be possible for anyone to come near him and cheat him. Mohini Maya protects the devotees. She cheats others, but she will not cheat the followers of Ekadasi; this is her promise to God. Visnu’s external potency, Bahiranga sakti, bribes the jivas and cheats them by offering them her gifts. She steals their good fortune away. But, Mohini-devi says, “I will not cheat the devotees; I will always protect them. I will cheat others, but I will never cheat Ekadasi-devi’s followers. I will never cheat the Lorld’s bhaktas. I will protect His dependents from the influence of His external potency.”

Part 5: Established Conclusions. The Siddhānta Propagated by Śrīla Gurupāda-padma (Part 1)

Ācārya kesarī oṁ viṣṇupāda Śrī Śrīla Bhakti Prajñāna Keśava Mahārāja’s strategy in preaching was to first break apart the ill-conceived doctrines opposed to bhakti, such as māyāvāda, smārta and sahajiyā, and then establish the pure bhakti practised and preached by Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu and His followers, the Gauḍīya Vaiṣṇava ācāryas...

Hearts Skipping to the Forest – Govinda-lilamrta

While walking in the dhāma, if you think of materialistic people and their mundane activities, then those very people will steal your energy. If you think of Vraja-bhumi and the glories of the Vrajavāsīs, then their power and mercy will come to you. You will acquire spiritual energy from svarūpa-śakti. Śrīla Gurudeva would perform parikramā of Vṛndāvana, Govardhana, Varsānā, Navadvīpa-dhāma and Kṣetra-maṇḍala with the accompaniment of saṅkīrtana and also the presence of Mahāprabhu and the guru-varga. Because of this, none of the pilgrims or brahmacārīs became weak. Śrīla Gurudeva said, "By performing parikramā and having darśana of the prominent pastime places of Rādhā-Kṛṣṇa, Mahāprabhu, and the Vaiṣṇavas, great strength will come. Love and affection will awaken in the heart and one will have spiritual energy. One will never be weak, hopeless or tired." If one remains with his body and uncontrolled mind while performing parikramā, thinking of worldly people and impermanent things and talking and joking about useless subject matters, then all his strength will be lost. Why is this? You are in Vraja-maṇḍala, Kṛṣṇa’s Līlā-bhūmi, but there you bring only useless things. What is coming from your mouth? Where is your consciousness? You are not in Līlā-bhūmi. You came to Vraja-dhāma, but your nature, mind, culture, behavior and etiquette keep you far away from the dhāma. You are not following the proper principles therefore you offend the dhāma. This is called dhāma-aparādha. If you perform dhāma-aparādha, then the dhāma itself will send you out, saying, "Why did you come here? Why aren't you glorifying Radha-krsna?" When someone comes to the dhāma with a negligent or disrespectful mood, then after one or two days he will lose taste for parikramā or any kind of dhāma-sevā. As a result of this, he will become hopeless and weak. If anyone has a little love, however, if he stays in the dhāma under the guidance of Śrī Guru and the Vaiṣṇavas, serves them, offers them gifts and hears their hari-kathā, then he will receive blessings. The eyes of Śrī Guru and the Vaiṣṇavas will surely fall favorably on that person who comes to the dhāma with a service attitude. They will think, "Oh, he is working so hard," And their hearts will melt. Guru and Vaiṣṇavas appreciate any love we can offer to God, His dhāma, and His devotees. If they see this love in us, then they will reciprocate with their own love. The flow of their love will transfer from their hearts to ours. Once I asked Śrīla Gurudeva, "Every day you are going on parikramā and conducting big feasts. Do you never become tired or weak?" “No,” Śrīla Gurudeva said. “Why would I? This is service for the Guru-varga. They are always with me, therefore I am never weak or hopeless."
