A Contagious Wind From the West – U.K., 20 June 1996

[Excerpt from Srila Gurudeva: Anthology, U.K. (20 June 1996), the second book in a series of volumes on Srila Gurudeva’s world preaching tours.]

Most human beings are engaged in the same activities as animals: sleeping, begetting children, being fearful, and eating. From this perspective, there is no difference in the activities between animals and human beings. But I think there are more problems in the human body than in other forms of life. Animals need not cook, they have nothing to do, yet they always have very tasteful and fresh food to eat. There is no need to explain about the ‘freshness’ of this food.

In India it is very difficult to divorce. But nowadays, a contagious wind from the West is blowing on India, and the Indians are falling prey to it. Here [in UK], a lady or a gentleman can divorce 10 or 20 times. Even at the age of 100, if he wants, a man can marry. But hogs and dogs can breed with 1,000’s of mates. We can yield one child at a time, but they can make hundreds and hundreds of children at a time—like a tortoise. A snake can make hundreds of children at a time. A hog begets not less than 16 children at a time. Dogs also make not less than eight. So, they are much more advanced than us in this regard—so much more advanced.

We have to support our children and we have to provide everything for their marriage. In India, if a man has daughters, then he has to sell everything for their marriage. But the animals don’t have to do like this.

We always have fear. I see that even after coming in spiritual life, after accepting a bona fide guru, we fear. Why do we fear? If we have surrendered to Gurudeva or Krsna, why should we fear?

When someone is bereft of full-fledged faith in Krsna or his spiritual master, he will fear — he has to. Those who have fear are not fully surrendered to the lotus feet of their spiritual master or to Krsna. Otherwise, they should have no fear. By accepting shelter at the lotus feet of Gurudeva, there will be no need for a devotee to fear. Why will he fear? But we see now everyone is plagued by fear. If you see a new devotee you will fear and think, “Why has he come? He will make a hole and trespass.” We fear so much.

Once in India, in Vrndavana, a devotee told me, “I have initiated a devotee, but now a certain guru enters my field of preaching. I have made a very good preaching field, but this guru trespasses and enters my area. What should I do?”

I very politely replied, “You are helping people of your area become Krsna conscious. If this guru, who you accuse of trespassing, is helping you in your preaching, then why are you fearful of him? There is nothing to fear at all…”

The Disappearance Day of Sri Srimad Bhakti Prajnana Kesava Maharaja

Today is the disappearance day (tirobhava-tithi) of our Gurudeva, nitya-lila pravista Srila Bhakti Prajnana Kesava Gosvami Maharaja. Where was I? I was born in the place of the demon Jarasandha [*See Endnote 1]. By the infinite mercy of my Guru-maharaja, he attracted this unqualified person and gave me a place at his lotus feet. By his mercy he made me qualified to understand the mission of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, and to preach it all around the world. I had the good fortune to be able to perform his service without any duplicity. Once, the personal servant of my Gurudeva named Ananga-mohana prabhu was afflicted with tuberculosis. At that time I approached my Gurudeva and said, “You go and preach. I will take the responsibility to look after Ananga-mohana prabhu.” Years later, Srila Trivikrama Maharaja told me, “The reason you are preaching so successfully all around the world is because you gave your life for the service of the servant of your Gurudeva. Therefore our Gurudeva has completely empowered you in every way.” It is only by my Gurudeva’s mercy that I was able to translate Jaiva-dharma from Bengali to Hindi. Now, by his mercy only, Jaiva-dharma and other books of Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura, like Sri Bhajana-rahasya, are being translated in so many languages, like English, French, German, Spanish and Chinese. This is all his mercy. By his mercy so many hundreds of Bengalis, Delhi devotees and foreigners have come here, and by his mercy some of them are even becoming qualified to take sannyasa. It is our good fortune that Sri Ananda prabhu, the personal cook of my Gurudeva, is here today. He was so dear to Gurudeva. He knew when Gurudeva was hungry or thirsty, and according to Gurudeva's desire he would manifest whatever was necessary. It is our good fortune that of all my god-brothers, Ananda prabhu could come here. How my Gurudeva was prepared to give his life for the service of his Gurudeva, Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura Prabhupada! Once, when Srila Prabhupada Bhaktisiddhanta was performing Sri Navadvipa-dhama parikrama, the sahajiyas and the Jata-gosais, those who are against the preaching of Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura and Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura) assembled at Praudhamaya to kill him. They gathered in large groups, throwing soda bottles, glass and rocks. Everybody ran to save their own lives, including even the sannyasis and the main disciples of Srila Prabhupada. But, our Gurudeva took Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Prabhupada into one room, and begged with great concern, “Please, give me your sannyasa-cloth. I will wear it, and you can wear my white cloth.” Srila Prabhupada gave his sannyasa cloth and danda to my Gurudeva. We think this was his real sannyasa initiation. Many years after Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Prabhupada disappeared from this world, he appeared to my Gurudeva in a dream and gave him sannyasa. This happened three times. He would say, “Oh Vinoda, you have not taken sannyasa, and therefore my preaching has completely stopped.” He gave Gurudeva sannyasa three times in dream. Later, that sannyasa was formalized by Sri Srimad Bhakti Raksaka Sridhara Maharaja in Katva. What was the speciality of my Gurudeva? He was very philosophical, with complete knowledge of all the sastra, and at the same time he was also a great rasika (relisher of ecstatic love of Krsna, and knower of all rasas) Vaisnava.

The True Meaning of Sri Vyasa puja

If a person can selflessly surrender in this way, it does not matter whether or not he worships his gurudeva with flowers and so forth, for such worship is just a symbolic act meant to instruct the common people. Real guru-puja cannot be performed until the mood of selfless surrender at the lotus feet of Sri Guru appears in oneís heart. Srila Sanatana Gosvami relinquished not only his home but also his post as prime minister, his abundant opulence, his servants and so on, specifically so he could fulfil the desire of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu. He approached Sriman Mahaprabhu empty-handed, and feeling, ìNow I am Yours,î he completely surrendered himself to Him. This alone is real Vyasa-puja.

Once while staying in Hawaii at the ocean-side home of Vṛndāvana Prabhu, Śrīla Gurudeva went outside to the liu garden and began plucking weeds and picking up twigs. Not seeing Gurudeva inside, his sevakas thought, “Where has Guru Mahārāja gone?” They went to search outside and were surprised to see him, although advanced in years, squatting and tending the garden. When his sevakas approached and spoke to him, Śrīla Gurudeva startled and returned to external awareness. He then returned inside. Internally, Gurudeva was with the sakhīs making sure there were no thorns on the pathway Kṛṣṇa would take through the forest. Śrīla Gurudeva explained that when one enters the bhāva-rājya—the realm of ecstatic spiritual service—while in one’s physical body, it is like a wild
