Increasing Kama – Bhagavad Gita

Kṛṣṇa sent out invitations for all to come to Dharma-ksetra at the time of the solar eclipse. Kṛṣṇa announced, “If you seek divine protection, come to Dharma-ksetra during this eclipse of the sun.”

Bhīṣma-pitāmaha, Duryodhana, demigods from the heavens, Brahmā and Śiva and people from all over the 14 worlds came and assembled at Dharma-ksetra. Kṛṣṇa then made arrangements for all those who came, such as the seven great sages and so forth to have residences, servants and all kinds of facility.

Kṛṣṇa said, “If we perform religious activities together, then the influence of this solar eclipse will not affect us. Otherwise this eclipse, which is particularly inauspicious, will greatly harm us. During the eclipse Rahu covers the light of the sun and casts all things into darkness or ignorance. In the darkness, the sun will be devoid of strength. In the darkness, the sun’s strength would not be present to help us.”

Being devoid of all śakti; anarthas, sin, bad activities, and bad qualities will disturb all living entities of the world. Bad qualities come from bad association. In the association of good people, good qualities arise.

Thus, anyone who falls under the influence Rahu will be destroyed. Therefore Kṛṣṇa summoned everyone to that pure sanctuary known as Dharma-ksetra where Kuru Mahārāja had worshipped Lord Hari many years before.

Kṛṣṇa not only brought many sages and Brahmanas to oversee the religious activities that would save the kings and the people from Rahu’s contamination, He especially called for the Vrajavāsīs.

He called Nanda, Yaśodā and the sakhās, as well as Srimati Rādhikā, Lalitā, Viśākhā and the mañjarīs. Kṛṣṇa knew that as soon as their footsteps fell upon that area Kuru-ksetra would become superior to any dharma-bhumi, karma-bhumi or any other pure place and would therefore become a prema-bhumi. By the attraction and influence of that prema, all living entities would be supremely benefited.

Not all people can enter Vraja. Unqualified people do not have the ability to enter Vraja-maṇḍala. However, the foot-dust and association of the Vrajavāsīs can enable all to enter Vraja. The effect of Rahu cannot come to any place where there is the foot-dust of the Vrajavāsīs. Just by being in the presence of the Vrajavāsīs and receiving their darśana, the jīvas, who are trapped in the cycle of karma and are always seeking to enjoy material things, can become completely pure and satisfied at heart.

How is this so?

jayati jana-nivāso devakī-janma-vādo
yadu-vara-pariṣat svair dorbhir asyann adharmam
sthira-cara-vṛjina-ghnaḥ su-smita-śrī-mukhena
vraja-pura-vanitānāṁ vardhayan kāma-devam

“Lord Sri Krsna is He who is known as jana-nivaso, the ultimate resort of all living entities, and who is also known as Devakinandana or Yasodā-nandana, the son of Devaki and Yasodā. He is the guide of the Yadu dynasty, and with His mighty arms He kills everything inauspicious as well as every man who is impious. By His presence He destroys all things inauspicious for all living entities, moving and inert. His blissful smiling face always increases the amorous desires of the gopis of Vrndavana. May He be all glorious and happy!”

Kṛṣṇa entered the forest of Vraja to increase the kāma of the Vraja-devīs. All living entities in the material universe suffer from the pangs of kāma, lusty desires. They think that to enjoy their senses by the fulfillment of their kāma is happiness. No one has been able to cross beyond this.

Kṛṣṇa thought to Himself, “All these living entities I called from around the world are all suffering from kāma, and they think that enjoying their senses is the highest attainment and the supreme goal of their lives. If I wish to liberate them from this and give them qualification to enter Vraja-maṇḍala, then I must free them from the disease of material existence, kama-roga.”

Who then are the doctors to cure the disease of material existence? They are none other than the Vrajavāsīs. No one else can cure the disease of the heart, kāma. This “heart disease” afflicts the jīvas, life after life. Whatever species the soul transmigrates into, lust will follow them there, and the fulfillment of their lusty desires and sense enjoyment will always be the purpose of their life. Therefore, if they are to traverse the path of progress of their soul, then first of all they must begin a relationship with the Vrajavāsīs.
Jayati jana-nivāso devakī-janma-vādo—this Kṛṣṇa, who is known as the Lord of Dvaraka is only the son of Devakī—in theory. This is not complete truth. Acquaintance of Kṛṣṇa is given in this verse.

Kṛṣṇa came to increase the kāma of Vraja. So how much kāma do the entities of this world have? Only a little. The living entities enjoy, and then they have nothing left. Then when kāma next attacks them, they again enjoy, then again it is finished. This is not kāma in truth. This is their hunger. When one is hungry, he eats and then the hunger is finished. This is simply desire for insignificant enjoyment of the senses.

So how can this increase? In other words, how will it become kāmānugā, a continuous flow of desire? How can it increase, stage by stage, until it will defeat even Kāmadeva? Kāmadeva shoots his five flower arrows and these make the living entities restless and agitated. Then they try to enjoy each other in a vain effort to become peaceful. So how can this kāma progress higher and higher?

Spiritual kāma comes in two categories namely: tat tat bhāva icchāmayī and sambhoga icchāmayī. This kāma will be according to one’s own desires, but it’s nature will be favorable to the will of God. This kāma should be continuous, without any cessation or break. Kṛṣṇa is the Supreme Personality, He is the Supreme Soul. Love for Him should never cease. It should never be destroyed or misused or directed to any other.

This love should continuously increase for the Supreme Lord. It should not be shared, or divided among others. The love present in the heart of all living entities should be used only for the sake of God. The transcendental beloved of all is only Kṛṣṇa. If, in the place of love for Kṛṣṇa, one loves others, that is selfishness. Actually, that is not real selfishness, rather it is averse to selfishness because it does not satisfy the Self-of-the-self; God. To give up love for Kṛṣṇa and have love for any other constitutes the greatest offense. This kind of cheating is the biggest anartha.

Why is that? The living entity has not manifested from anywhere other than God. All living entities are the parts parcels of God. All living entities are vibhinnamsa-tattva or separated parts of the Lord. Therefore our love should be for Him.

God has 64 special qualities. The demigods have only fifty-five. The incarnations of God have sixty, and ordinary living entities can have up to fifty. These fifty will come if you are a little clean. . . these qualities come in the heart, one after the other. At that time, others will not be able to catch and keep you nearby. You will be uncontrolled by others and will not be their slave. Willpower will come. When God’s qualities come, willpower will come. Otherwise, one is always pushed down and without help, having no strength.
