No Hopelessness!

– Srila Gurudeva Bhaktivedanta Narayana Goswami Maharaja, 24 Sept 2000

“There should be no hopelessness. This sense of hopelessness is the cause of downfall. If gurudeva chastises us, we should simply think how to please him more — not that we become hopeless.

For some period of time my Gurudeva appeared to be not satisfied with anything. What did I do? I always engaged in doing a great deal of service, so that he would become happy. So don’t be hopeless. Think, “It is for my betterment.” Gurudeva has no self-interest. You should think, “My Gurudeva is so much more intelligent than me. He is most intelligent. He is my well-wisher and friend.”

If a bona fide guru chastises a disciple, it is for the betterment of that disciple — for the development of his bhakti.”

Narottama dāsa bole paḍinū asat-bhole, paritrāṇa kara mahāśaya. Śrīla Narottama dāsa Ṭhākura says, “Alas! I have lost my life. I never met with honest people. I was cheated of my welfare by associating with degraded people. Thus, I don’t spend my entire time in service.” Therefore, a sādhaka should never talk with degraded people. Kṛṣṇa has promised and said, “If you surrender unto Me, I will take you out of māyā. I will bring you near Me.” Many living entities are present in the ocean. But, many of these entities are dangerous creatures. Similarly, society has many dangerous people. Also, those who call themselves tutors and guardians only give mundane rasa. By drinking this mundane rasa, a person will become like a cruel animal. The sun evaporates water and forms rain bearing clouds. A conditioned soul is always punished in this mundane world. But those who take shelter of God and His associates are always protected.

The Vyasa Puja of Srila Bhakti Prajnana Kesava Gosvami Maharaja

Why do our acaryas worship all these gurus? If one only accepts one's own guru and does not accept the guru-parampara, he will not make tangible advancement in bhakti. It is stated in Srimad-Bhagavatam (1.1.3): nigama-kalpa-taror galitam phalam...

Once, in the late 1970’s, with Srila Gurudeva, during Nrsimha–caturdasi in Devananda Gaudiya Matha, a huge storm came in the evening, after we had been performing kirtana and programs, and fasting the whole day. It was such a huge storm, and all around our temple, everything was destroyed. The buildings and trees were all blown over.
