Gurudeva Katha 1996 Lectures Sannyāsa Pastime of Śrīla Svāmī Mahārāja

Sannyāsa Pastime of Śrīla Svāmī Mahārāja

I told Svāmījī, “Kṛṣṇa has made you a street beggar, but not just any street beggar. Like how Caitanya Mahāprabhu went to every place and preached the chanting of, ‘Hare Kṛṣṇa Hare Kṛṣṇa Kṛṣṇa Kṛṣṇa Hare Hare, Hare Rāma Hare Rāma Rāma Rāma Hare Hare,’ you will also follow in Mahāprabhu’s footsteps and preach the holy name all around the world very shortly.”

Svāmījī then went to my Guru Mahārāja and told him, “Yes. I agree to take the renounced order of life.”

A godbrother of Guru Mahārāja and Svāmījī called Sanātana Prabhu also took sannyāsa with Svāmījī. His age was 99 years. He told Svāmījī, “If you take sannyāsa, then I will also take sannyāsa, despite my advanced age.”

[Laughter]

And then Svāmījī became so energetic and he said, “Yes. I should take sannyāsa.”

Then I made a very good sannyāsa-daṇḍa for Svāmījī. I also arranged the sannyāsa cloth for Svāmījī—the uttarīya and bahirvāsa. I showed Svāmījī on how to wear this cloth and tie it around oneself. I did a fire sacrifice. kīrtana was going on, headed by Kṛṣṇadāsa Bābājī Mahārāja. All our brahmacārīs were there. It was Viśvarūpa-mahotsava. Many senior Vaiṣṇavas, the godbrothers of Prabhupāda were there. After some time, Gurudeva gave him sannyāsa. Sannyāsa is not just an external formality. By accepting the sannyāsa-mantra, one starts to serve Kṛṣṇa in the mood of the gopīs. The gopāla-mantra is one such similar mantra. I think all the members of this assembly are devotees who have taken second initiation. What are the hidden, deep meanings behind the mantras we chant? We should try to know the deep meanings of these mantras and enter the real devotional line Svāmījī has shown. Svāmījī was really a rūpānuga-vaiṣṇava. But during his manifest stay in this world, he had no time to give all that he wanted. His real mission was not to cut the jungles of karmīs, yogīs, jñānīs, māyāvādīs, and Buddhists.

By the time Svāmījī cut all these jungles down, Kṛṣṇa told him, “Many services have been done. Now, I want your service. Come on! Come on!” And Kṛṣṇa called Svāmījī back, and Svāmījī returned to Goloka Vṛndāvana to serve the Divine Couple-Śrī Rādhā and Kṛṣṇa.

Devotee: Gaura Premānande! Haribol!

[Audio break]

Śrīla Gurudeva: Thank you for giving me the chance to glorify Svāmījī. I pray to Svāmījī that he should be merciful to all of you.

Devotees: Thank you Mahārāja.

[Audio break]

[In the following conversation, Śrīla Gurudeva describes some photographs to the assembled devotees]

Śrīla Gurudeva: This picture is from the Gauḍīya. It is very old, many such pictures were taken from 1924 to 1930.

Devotee: Is your Gurudeva there in this picture?

Śrīla Gurudeva: Yes.

[Śrīla Gurudeva points out where Śrīla Parama Gurudeva is in the picture]

Devotee: That is your Gurudeva!

Devotees: Haribol! Śrīla Param Gurudeva ki jaya!

Devotee: This picture is from the Vraja-maṇḍala parikramā?

Realization First – Harinama-cintamani

If a person speaks without realization, it is only speculation. Anything he says is ineffective and cannot help others. However, if you yourself are trying to practice and realize, then you can inspire others to also practice. But if you try to bribe people to follow something you yourself are not following, no one will hear you...

Thyself – Bhagavad Gita

At that time, they think that their real dharma is to maintain the body and serve the body, but this is a temporary situation and is not the eternal dharma of the soul. We have forgotten that. Therefore, Kṛṣṇa gave His svarūpa-śakti through singing this gītā, liberating the living entities from false ego and understanding. By endeavoring to follow this Bhagavad-gītā; the teachings of Kṛṣṇa, one can be liberated from all false attachment and illusion in this world. One will become established in that dharma, form and nature of the soul. Kṛṣṇa instructed Arjuna, "Becoming established in knowledge of the soul, follow your duty and fight. Their bodies will be destroyed, but not their souls. You have no fault. I am instructing you to do this." When a person who has knowledge of the soul performs his duty, he cannot be affected by sin. On the other hand, if one does not follow his duty, then sin will come to him...

Dirty Criticism of Devotees, Why Bother?

They never complain and never become angry. Why is this? Because these ideas and actions take you away from Krsna. A wise person will not accept anything impure. This is natural. So why should anyone become disturbed when unwanted situations manifest or when one is criticized? We must disregard and avoid these things because they are also just dirty substances...

Preaching Sanatana-dharma in Vasirahata and the Reply to Sri Chattopadhyaya Mahasaya’s Protest

...bhagavad-bhakti, devotion to the Supreme Lord, is sanatana-dharma. The constitutional position of the jiva is to be a servant of Bhagavan. Therefore, service of Bhagavan is sanatana-dharma in the past, present and future. It is also known as Vedic dharma, bhagavata-dharma and vaisnava-dharma. The jiva and the material world are never false. The jiva is eternally a part of Bhagavan, and...

The Dawn of Love – 08 Feb 2013 – Govinda-lilamrta

What is the feeling of Kavirāja Gosvāmī here? “I am unqualified, I have no skill or intelligence, but the nectarful ocean of Kṛṣṇa’s pastimes has overcome me. I don’t know which pastime comes first, second, third, or last. I don’t know the proper sequence of Kṛṣṇa’s pastimes. Mahā-bhāgavata Vaiṣṇavas know this, but I don’t. I cannot swim across this ocean. I am only sitting near the shore, feeling a breeze of air wafting from the sea of rasa, causing my bliss to ever swell. If one is touched by even a single particle of the air coming off that sea of rasa, the soul becomes enlivened with devotion and love. There are many pure Vaiṣṇavas in Vraja who are very qualified and learned. Rūpa Gosvāmī Prabhu composed many books in perfect poetry. If anyone reads the books of Śrīla Rūpa Gosvāmī Prabhu and compares them to this Govinda līlāmṛta, they will certainly say, ‘Oh, this book is nothing in comparison to Śrīla Rūpa Gosvāmī’s literature. I feel that I should not even write. Lalitā Mādhava, Haṁsa duta and the books of Rūpa Gosvāmī Prabhu are so wonderful. If I write this, people will laugh, and say, ‘This is useless, and not truthful.’
