Gurudeva Katha 1996 Lectures None Are Like The Gopīs

None Are Like The Gopīs

Do you know a gopī is?

Devotee: Yes.

Śrīla Gurudeva: Who is called a gopī?

Devotee: A girl who follows Kṛṣṇa in Vṛndāvana.

Śrīla Gurudeva: The gopīs are incomparably beautiful. They are more beautiful than Nārāyaṇa’s consort, Lakṣmī-devī. They are more beautiful than the queens of Dvārakā. They are highly qualified. Their love and affection for Kṛṣṇa is unparalleled. None are like the gopīs. No personalities of this material or spiritual realms can be compared to the gopīs. By their transcendental beauty and qualities, they can easily attract the Supreme Personality of Godhead in a moment. This is the glory of the gopīs.

Although Mahādeva was in the form of a gopī, he did not know his name, place of residence, and services. When rāsa-līlā was being performed, the gopīs and Kṛṣṇa were not as blissful as they would normally be. They told one another, “Today, an anonymous and unqualified person has entered the rāsa arena. So, there is no happiness today.” So, Mahādeva forgot about himself and he was of a conception of being a gopī. Wearing the dress of a gopī, Mahādeva wandered around Vraja. He was sweeping around Vraja. But, Śaṅkara or Mahādeva was alone, Yogamāyā-devī was not there. Mahādeva hid himself and saw the rāsa-līlā pastime.

The gopīs asked Mahādeva, “Who are you? Where have you takes birth? Who is your husband?”

But, Śaṅkara could not answer.

The gopīs further asked, “Who is your father and mother?”

But, even this question failed to arouse an answer from Mahādeva. He could not reply. Then the gopīs began to slap Śaṅkara and he began to cry. He cried out, “O Mā! O Yogamāyā! Save me! Save me! They are beating me.”

Yogamāyā then immediately appeared on the scene. Yogamāyā told the gopīs, “Oh she is my student. I have brought her here. You should be merciful to her. You should accept her in your fold.”

Then Kṛṣṇa came and said, “I am now giving you the power, by which you will be given a place in Vṛndāvana and from that place, you are granted the authority of not letting unqualified and faithless people from entering even the border of Vṛndāvana. But, you should make them qualified before entering Vṛndāvana.”

Hence, Durgā-devī has no place in Vṛndāvana, only Yogamāyā is present in Vṛndāvana. Durgā-devī cannot gallop past the material and Vaikuṇṭha realms and enter Vṛndāvana. Durgā is the shadow of Yogamāyā. So, we should try to take shelter at the lotus feet of Yogamāyā. Yogamāyā will take all the conditioned souls to the lotus feet of Kṛṣṇa where you will experience the topmost form of inconceivable spiritual happiness. You will be drowned in an ocean of bliss for eternity and you will never experience any birth, death, sorrows, or sufferings. In that ocean of unending happiness, many waves crash against each other and we will roll and play along with those waves of prema. Therefore, you should try to enter in that infinite ocean of bhakti. And all your secondary activities will have been done away with. When you come next time, I will try to help you; if you want.

Insubordinate Follower – Bhagavad Gita

God has great parental affection for His devotees and He is the fulfiller of their desires. God will even give up His supreme word of truth, but He will not give up His parental affection. If He did not have this affection, then He would have told Arjuna, "No! This is not good for you. Hear My words!" However, because of His affection for Arjuna, His heart melted. His name is Acyuta. He can never give up His nature. If a child pleads with his mother again and again for something, she will be bound by affection to fulfill his wants. The child is stubborn and will not listen to his mother if she tells him why the object he wants is not beneficial for him. Therefore she allows the child to see how harmful his desires are while keeping him protected at the same time. Then, intelligence will come. If one is forbidden from the start, then he will never submit to hear good instruction...

After taking sannyāsa, Caitanya Mahāprabhu came to Śrī Jagannātha Purī. In the Gauḍīya-sampradāya, sannyāsa means accepting gopī-bhāva and the...

If the living entities have no love, they will not be able to change. They will chant any other names. Give them prema.” “Yes,” Mahāprabhu said, “I will give. I have not given this in a very long time.”

Heart's Disease – Bhagavad-Gita

The greatest fight in this world is over objects of sense enjoyment. This kind of fight is only over lust. As long as the seed of lust remains present in the heart, the living entities suffer. This is the disease of the heart. The foolish living entities believe that they will become happy by satiating their lusty desires through insignificant sense enjoyment. They do not know that Kṛṣṇa is the transcendental Kāmadeva, who always increases the kāma of His devotees; their inherent pure love for Him. An extremely wealthy man does not fear the expense of a few coins, while a poor man weeps if even one coin is lost or spent. What is the worry for those who have billions and billions of dollars? Kṛṣṇa always increases the love, prema or kāma of His devotees. Then His devotees never have desire to have prema for anyone other than Kṛṣṇa...

By chanting Kṛṣṇa’s name just once, all your sins, anarthas, and offenses will be destroyed. And then, the sādhaka will be admitted into the realm of prema-bhakti. The sādhaka will then be ornamented with the different symptoms of ecstasy. Crossing māyā, the desire for kṛṣṇa-sevā will completely blossom in his heart. Kṛṣṇa’s name bestows many fruits. Although you have been chanting Kṛṣṇa’s names for a long time, your heart doesn’t melt and tears don’t appear. This is because of offenses. Your love is lost because you have shared it with many others. You cannot use your love for God. In this world only ‘mortgage love’ is found. Like, Kardama Ṛṣi told Devahūti, “I will leave as soon as a son is born. I will stay with you only until our son is born.” Many people think, “The śāstras have stated that a person should be in family life from the age of twenty-five to fifty. So, I will loan myself to one person.” A person says, “If your father gives ten million rupees, I will become your slave.”
