If Some Obstacles Come…

If we have a task to perform but due to some obstacle we cannot complete it, we simply return home. But the gopis were searching for Krsna everywhere, asking the vines, trees, tulasi, and the deer if they had seen Him; still they could not find Him anywhere. But did they return to their homes? Even though they could not find Him, their homes and families had been completely forgotten.

They became so absorbed in thinking of Him that it was as if they were possessed by ghosts. Taking on Krsna’s identity, they began imitating His activities and saying to one another, “How beautiful is my gait? How beautifully do I play the flute?” At that time they didn’t know what they were doing, and this is what is meant by ‘tan-manaskas’. They became so absorbed in Krsna that their natures changed like iron put into a fire and they forgot everything.

The Topmost Love – San Francisco 05 1996 July

You must know that Śrīmatī Rādhikā’s love and affection is the topmost among all the gopīs. We cannot imagine Her love and affection. The nature of the soul is also to have love and affection for Kṛṣṇa, though it is not as ‘vibhu’ (great) as that of Śrīmatī Rādhikā and the gopīs, since we are not the bodily expansions of Kṛṣṇa or Śrīmatī Rādhikā. We are separated part and parcels of Kṛṣṇa. So our love and affection is also of a part and parcel nature. So we should give our hearts to Kṛṣṇa. We should not be pleased to live in this world and collect many things; after all we will have to leave everything behind. Where to go we don’t know. So we should try more and more to develop our love and affection for Kṛṣṇa from śraddhā to niṣṭhā, ruci, āsakti, bhāva, prema, sneha, māna, praṇaya, rāga, and anurāga, following the footsteps of the gopīs. This is the only requirement. The only way to fulfill our deepest desires is to follow the footsteps of the gopīs. If you want liberation, you can exercise your mental faculties and arrive at the conception, “I am Brahmā.” This is the process to achieve the goal of liberation. Or if you want to serve Śrī Nārāyaṇa then you can practice the limbs of vaidhī-bhakti. If you want to go higher than that, than you can serve Śrī Rukmiṇī, Satyabhāmā and Dvārkādhīśa, and you can serve Śrī Jagannātha, Baladeva, and Subhadrā in Śrī Jagannātha Purī. If you want to be a sakhā (friend) of Kṛṣṇa, then you can follow Śrīdāma, Subala, Madhumaṅgala, and the other sakhās. If you want to serve Kṛṣṇa as a parent, then you should follow in the footsteps of Śrī Nanda and Yaśodā. If you want to have the love and affection of the gopīs, then follow their footsteps and then you can have it. We will explain more on another day.

Becoming One-pointed to Attain the Goal

Once, there was a poor brāhmaṇa boy who lived in a Gurukula, following the footsteps of his Gurudeva. One day, the boy heard the announcement in the street that the king was going to give his kingdom to anybody who came to his palace the next day, and then was going to retire to the forest to engage in bhajana. The boy told this to his Guru Mahārāja, who advised the boy not to believe it. Upon hearing this, the boy started questioning the view of his guru, saying that without having faith in one’s country, one’s king, or God Himself, one is unable to make progress in one’s life. But his guru insisted that he shouldn’t believe anyone since everyone in this world is a cheater, and would try to capture him and make him his slave. However, the boy could not listen to his guru and decided to go to the king’s palace anyway...

The philosophy of Maya
