Who Is Our Most Worshipable? – 24 Feb 1997 Bali, Denpasar

Srila Gurudeva:

ārādhyo bhagavān vrajeśa-tanayas tad-dhāma vrndāvanam

I already explained this sloka yesterday, ārādhyo bhagavān vrajeśa-tanayas.

First I should give the meaning of the whole sloka and then I will try to explain more.

Mathuresa Krsna is not ārādhya, our ārādhya, He may be the ārādhya of Shankar, Brahma and all others and He may be ārādhyadeva, worshipable for all the universe, but Caitanya Mahaprabhu is telling to us that our ārādhyadeva is Vrajendra-nandana Syamasundar, not Mathuresh and Dwarkadish, not Ramacandra, nor any other manifestation of Krsna.

We have some honor to Them, but our ārādhyadeva, supreme worshipable deity, is Radha and Krsna Yugala.

In the first line it has not told of Srimati Radhika, only Vrajendra-nandana, but Vrajendra-nandana means Radha and Krsna.

ārādhyo bhagavān vrajeśa-tanayas tad-dhāma vrndāvanam

Vrajendra-nandana who took birth in Gokul from the womb of Mother Yasoda and is always playing in Vrindavan, He is Govinda, Gopinatha, Madan-mohan, and is our ārādhyadeva. As Krsna is ārādhya, Vrindavan-dham is also worshipable for us and not a single degree less because He is Baladeva Himself.

Dhama Baladeva Prabhu has manifested in the shape of the dhama. Baladeva Prabhu is the presiding deity of sandhini-sakti, so He is not less than Vrajendra-nandana.

ramyā kācid upāsanā vraja-vadhū-vargenā yā kalpitā

Caitanya Mahaprabhu is telling, the third thing, that the gopis of Vrindavan, like Srimati Radhika, Lalita, Visakha, Chandra, Padma and all others serve Krsna in such a way that nobody can compare.

ramyā kācid upāsanā vraja-vadhū-vargenā yā kalpitā

Upāsanā means to come near and to serve. Vraja-vadhū, that is the gopis, we should serve in that mood, with love and affection. They served Krsna in rasa, ordering Krsna to come and serve their feet, decorate them and all these things.

So this way of serving Krsna is highest amongst santa, dasya, sakhya, vatsalya, and madhurya. For this there should be some evidence and that evidence is the Srimad Bhagavatam Himself, the embodiment of Krsna.

[verse 6.38]

The Bhagavata is the incarnation and embodiment of Krsna, so only this is evidence. Caitanya Mahaprabhu told that this is the evidence. In this Srimad Bhagavatam it is told how the gopis serve Krsna and how Krsna is the Supreme Personality of Godhead, ete cāmśa-kalāh pumsah Krsnas tu bhagavān svayam, and the gopis aradhana is topmost. He has said: na pāraye ‘ham niravadya-samyujām. Krsna is telling, “I cannot repay the gopis. I can repay all others but I cannot repay the gopis.”

vande nanda-vraja-strīnām pāda-renum abhīksnaśah
yāsām harı-kathodgītam punāti bhuvana-trayam

So Uddhava is telling that he doesn’t want any benediction from Krsna, but he wants to worship and take the dust from the lotus feet of the gopis.

Srimad Bhagavatam is evidence for all these things.

śrī-caitanya-mahāprabhor matam idam tatrādaro nah parah

So we must honor the idea, the principle of Srimad Bhagavatam, this is the aim and object and essence of Srimad Bhagavatam and all Caitanya Mahaprabhu’s teachings.

[Audio break]

So Caitanya Mahaprabhu has come to give only this thing, the gopis’ prema. He came and gave so many things, all rasas, but especially He came only for this. So if by hearing all these things a devotee will develop a greed for the highest topic of prema like the gopis, then he will come in the line of Caitanya Mahaprabhu. Otherwise if he only wants to be in dasya then he will have to go in Ramanuja sampradaya, or to Madhva or Visnu Swami or Nimbaditya. They will not come in the line of Caitanya Mahaprabhu. So for this reason He came and gave nama prema [verse 10.00] Caitanya Mahaprabhu gave nama, plus this prema, only this prema.

When He was going through the forest from Jagannatha Puri to Vrindavan, all the animals were crying and weeping and chanting Krsna and they received prema. What type of prema? Not that type of prema, because they had no anugatya of the gopis, they were not doing bhajan under the guidance of the gopis, so general prema they will have and after that they will be in the shape of man and then they will associate with high class of Vaisnavas and then they may have that prema.

So yesterday I told the boyhood pastimes of Krsna, how the Vrajavasis were clapping, the sakhas were clapping.

Some of the leaders in ISKCON are expressing doubts, saying that, “You are telling all these things, our Guru Maharaja Srila Bhaktivedanta Swami maharaj has not told all these things,” but I think that they are not correct. I heard myself how he used to sing: rūpa-ragunātha-pade hôibe ākuti kabe hāma bujhabô se jugala-pīriti. What is this? He used to sing Brahma Samhita:

venum kvanantam aravinda-dalāyatāksam
barhāvatamsam astāmbuda-sundarāngam
govinda ādi-purusam tam aham bhajāmi

What is the meaning of kandarpa-koti-kamanīya-viśesa-śobham? And after this sloka, the next is even more important:

ratnāngadam pranayama-kela-kalāvilāsam
śyāmam tri-bhanga-lalitam niyata-prakāśam
govinda ādi-purusam tam aham bhajāmi

He used to sing all these things weeping and he used to order me to sing: Śri Rūpa mañjarī-pada, sei mora sampada, sei mora jīvanera jīvana, what is this? This is the same thing. So in the beginning he has not told like so but his aim and object was this and for this he has explained Srimad Bhagavatam, for this he has explained Caitanya-caritamrta.

I think that he must have quoted this sloka anywhere because all our disciplic acharyas have taken this from Visvanatha Chakravati Thakur.

So now I am going to tell a story.

Yesterday I told one pastime of Krsna. He is looking like a very orphan boy and all the cowherd boys are clapping and making fun and all other things but the next day He took some earth in His mouth, in Brahmanda Ghata, the same place as the last pastime. Krsna, as is the habit of little boys, He took the earth in His mouth, but at the same time all the cowherd boys were seeing that He was taking earth, somewhat hiding Himself, but they saw and they began to chastise Krsna, “Why You took earth?” they said.

“Oh I have not taken!” Krsna replied, and all were quarrelling with Krsna.

Baladeva told that, “You should not eat earth.”

Krsna insisted that He had not taken. The boys went running to Yasoda Ma and complained against Krsna that this naughty boy has taken earth in His mouth. Mother Yasoda ran to Brahmanda Ghat and said, “Have You eaten earth?”

He told that He had not taken.

“But all the boys are telling this,” mother said.

Krsna told that, “All the boys are against Me, and that is why they want that you should chastise Me, that is why they are complaining. Otherwise, why is Baladeva telling this, He never tells lies. They have given Him something and made Baladeva in their party.”

Yasoda said, “Okay, open Your mouth so I can see.”

He told, “You can see,” and at once she saw the whole universe, lakhs and lakhs of Brahma’s, Visnu’s, Mahesa’s, they were all there. She also saw that she herself was there, and Krsna also.

“What is this, what am I seeing?” she began to think.

“Why am I seeing this?”

Then she took some water and splashed it in her eyes but again she saw the same thing. She thought that maybe a ghost had come or that it was some maya of some demigods. She never thought that Krsna was the Supreme Personality of Godhead.

There is siddhanta here, this is opulence, but this opulence is somewhat prominent in Dvaraka and Mathura and almost all in Goloka and Vaikuntha. But in Vrindavan much more opulence is there but it is covered with madhurya. What is that madhurya? Whether there is opulence or no opulence—opulence will always follow Krsna, always. In Vraja also, more opulence is there. If Krsna gives up His opulence then He would just be a very ordinary boy like us, so opulence will serve Him always, but it will be covered with the mood of naravata, like He is a normal boy.

In other places, Krsna will change and reveal His visvarupa (universal form), but here He is not changing any shape. “Oh! Here you can see My little mouth, how can I then be Bhagavan?”

And in this little mouth she saw all these things. This is a great opulence in Krsna, but externally He is just a little boy and Yasoda Ma has nothing to do with this opulence. She is thinking maybe a ghost may have come or she thinks she is seeing a dream, but she is not thinking that He is the Supreme Personality of Godhead.

So this is opulence, aisvarya samagrasya viryasya yasasah sriyah. Opulence will be in Krsna but He will always be like a simple, normal boy. So this is called madhurya. But if we think that Krsna has no opulence in Vraja it is wrong, always it is there, but covered.
