The Way of Eternal Happiness – 1997 Jan 28 Malaysia

Again, you should try to come with me to India at Varanasi, where the Ganga is flowing. Caitanya Mahaprabhu is sitting and nearby is Sanatana Goswami. Sanatana Goswami asked, “Who am I?”

Caitanya Mahaprabhu told that, “You don’t know who you are? You are Sanatana Goswami. You are the son of…” He told his father’s name.

Sanatana Goswami said, “I know I am not this physical body, but I don’t know who I am. Please explain.”

Then He told, “Actually this body is mortal. This body is not our self. In a few days, few months or few years, at least in a hundred years, this body will be changed, and it will become ashes. So, this is not us. The soul is part and parcel of the Supreme Personality of Godhead Krsna. He never took birth, never dies, has no suffering—nothing. He has no problems, unlike in this world. He has no old age. He is always a young age, kishor age, so beautiful. There are no problems to solve there. Only there is love and affection everywhere. The trees also have sense. They also have love and affection for Krsna and each other. No quarrel, no demons or bad persons are there.”

So, by chance, we have forgotten our beloved Krsna, and we have come to this world thinking that we are this physical body. My home is Malaysia, America, Greenland or India. I am black, I am golden colored or white. So many things. But this is only for one, two or three days. Everything in this world is mortal. Even if you receive everything from this world, you will not be happy. You can check and see that street beggars are weeping, rich persons are weeping, the president of America is weeping. They will have to become old and give up this body. So Caitanya Mahaprabhu said, “jivera svarupa haya krsnera nitya dasa.” But now we have forgotten this. How do we remember this? If we are remembering that we are part and parcel, servant of Krsna, then we can be happy here, and in that world also and eternally we will be happy. He is giving an example. You should try to understand this. This is a very great philosophy but also it is very easy to understand if our heart is pure.
There was a boy who was very poor, penniless, and he was hunting to eat and staying anywhere. His clothes were worn and torn. Actually, he had no farthing.

One day a person came and asked that boy, “Why are you so penniless? I see that you are suffering so much like a street beggar.”

The boy replied, “I am an orphan now. I have no money. I have nothing to be used.”

The man replied, “Oh no. You are so rich. I know. Your father was so rich. He has left so much wealth for you. He kept so much for you for your future, but he went away to some place and died there. So, he could not tell you that he has kept so much wealth for you, but I know where he has kept it. It is in this house in a corner. He has kept so much for you. It is sufficient for you.

The boy said, “But I don’t know where it is.”

The man replied, “You should dig some earth from there, but don’t dig towards the west. There is a big serpent there. He will come and bite you and you will die. If you dig in the south, a yaksa, a ferocious and dangerous ghost will take you and you will die. If you dig in the north, you will find poisonous insects like scorpions and other dangerous insects. They will at once attack you and you will die. Come with me to the east side of the house. You will have to dig very little; only twelve inches, one foot. Very carefully you should remove the earth and you will see. The boy became so pleased and began to dig. After one foot he saw, ‘Oh so many gold coins are appearing!’ There was a kind of big pot full of golden coins. The boy became so happy. He fell flat at the lotus feet of that person who was a friend of his father’s. So he took it from there.

Now let us come to our subject. The person who told the boy to dig in the east, who showed the way, how to be and how to act and advance is the spiritual master. We are all like the boy. We want very good health, beautiful wife, husband, and children. They cannot make you happy. This is the west. In the north, it is yoga and tapasya. Learning so much and controlling your country. “Anyone who is from out of this country should not enter here.” Otherwise they will divide and control. They will check your passport and visa so much. Like dogs they are fearing always, “Don’t let them come in.” And if they see anyone, a man, dog, or anyone they will bark, “Don’t come here unless you can take all my things.” Swamiji used to speak this. He used to be abused for this.

Worldly things cannot make you happy. We should try to associate with the persons who have realized the soul and Krsna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, who has made this world, our minds and who has made this sea. Why are waves coming repeatedly? He is controlling this. They are coming at a fixed time. The sun rises at a fixed time in a whole year. One minute less [every day] and then again increasing. Now it is going on. It has come to extent position in the south. Now it is on the head of Malaysia and Australia and it will go to India and here will be cold. Who is managing everything? Who supported you in your mother’s womb? Who gave you this intelligence? Krsna has given. God has given. So, we should take some time and deeply pray, “I want to serve you.” This needs no money or constriction of the mind, in night in the day, anywhere and anytime you can say this. Krsna is so merciful without any reason. He has causeless mercy. If you chant and listen to hari-katha of his pastimes, He will come in your heart. He will remove all kinds of problems. Everything.

Sanatana Goswami then asks, “What should we do? How can we realize this?” You can see that in a mustard seed there is some oil. In milk, there is ghee or butter, but we will have to churn it, not for a short time, but for one hour or an hour and a half. Then the butter will come and if you put the butter on the fire, you will soon see ghee. Krsna is everywhere. Everywhere. He is in all particles, living and non-living. He is in our heart, only two fingers apart from you. Both are there, but the souls are not realizing this. By the grace, the special mercy of Vaisnavas, the realized souls, we can see this everywhere, just like Prahlada Maharaj could see. We can also see this everywhere. What he will tell, you should try to obey. Chant the holy name. Hare Krsna Hare Krsna Krsna Krsna Hare Hare Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare. Remember His pastimes. But one thing you will have to do is you should not harm others. Even a grass should not be taken. What you cannot make, don’t destroy. Krsna has created everything. All the souls are there. They are tasting the fruits of their previous karma and impressions. Don’t be disturbed, otherwise they will come and kill you. Don’t take meat, wine and other things. Be pure and chant and you will see in a very little time you will realize Krsna. We should do like this.

Do you know Prahlada Maharaj and Hiranyakasipu? Prahlada Maharaj was a boy of only five years. His father was Hiranyakasipu. He was a very rich person. Not only rich, he was a great emperor of the whole world. He received a boon from Brahma that he should not die. Brahma said, “I cannot give you this, but you can desire any other thing for a benediction.”

Hiranyakasipu told, “No one can kill me. I should not die in the day or in the night. I should not die in the sky, or on the earth, or in the sea, by any weapon, or by any man, or beast. I should not die in any year.”

Brahma then said, “Yes you may be like that.”

At that time Hiranyakasipu became so strong. His fourth child was Prahlada Maharaja. From his birth, Prahlada used to always chant Hare Krsna Hare Krsna Krsna Krsna Hare Hare Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare. When he became five years old, he went to school for training with his gurudeva. His guru was so powerful. His name was Sukracarya. If a man has died, he could take some water, sprinkle it on the body and chant a mantra and revive his soul. So Prahlada went to learn there but at that time the guru was absent so his two sons, Sanda and Amarka began to teach him. What did they teach? Politics, policy, diplomacy, hypocrisy, economics and all the things we learn in university. We do not learn to have Krsna’s service and what is love and affection. In the university they cannot teach this. All other subjects were there. They were teaching him. He was listening, but not keeping it in his heart. He was always chanting. Hare Krsna Hare Krsna Krsna Krsna Hare Hare Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare. His father called him and asked, “What have you learned from your teachers. Tell me something.” He thought that Prahlada would speak about politics, hypocrisy or economics but Prahlada said, “I have learned from my Gurudeva that in this world all are unhappy. All are feeling misery. So they should give up all their relations, their association and should be in the association of pure Vaisnavas and chant Hare Krsna Hare Krsna Krsna Krsna Hare Hare Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare. When Hiranyakasipu heard this he became so furious at Prahlad, and came to kill him. What is your position? Prahlad Maharaj spoke this. What sloka is this?

sri-prahlada uvaca
tat sadhu manye ‘sura-varya dehinam
sada samudvigna-dhiyam asad-grahat
hitvatma-patam grham andha-kupam
vanam gato yad dharim asrayeta

Prahlada Maharaja replied: O best of the asuras, King of the demons, as far as I have learned from my spiritual master, any person who has accepted a temporary body and temporary household life is certainly embarrassed by anxiety because of having fallen in a dark well where there is no water but only suffering. One should give up this position and go to the forest [vana]. More clearly, one should go to Vrndavana, where only Krsna consciousness is prevalent, and should thus take shelter of the Supreme Personality of Godhead.
SB. 7.5.5.

Prahlada Maharaj spoke this sloka, “O supermost demon! You are the king of the demons. I think that to chant the holy names in the association of the Vaisnavas and bhaktas, this gives you eternal happiness. Other things cannot. So you should always try to remember Krsna’s pastimes and names.”

Hiranyakasipu became furious. Prahlada said, hitvätma-pätaà gåham andha-küpaà. These houses are like blind wells. Do you know a blind well? In a jungle there was a well with water but after some time the water dried and serpents and scorpions came there and bricks were broken and fell inside. Grasses grew and the pipala or banyan tree…do you know a pipal tree and banyan tree? A tree having these hairs. You will see this everywhere. The banyan’s branches were here and there covering the well. A man was going to cut a tree or take some honey from the forest. At once, a dangerous tiger attacked. The man was upset, “What to do?” He ran but he could not run as quickly as the tiger. He was about to be attacked but at once he saw there was a well and there were branches hanging from the tree and by this it is covered. So he took two branches of the tree and went down. But when he looked below, he saw dangerous and poisonous serpents hissing as if they were about to bite him. So he could not go inside. He was hanging onto the two branches. In the meantime, two rats came. One was black and the other white. They began to chew the branches of the trees from where he was hanging from.

Understand? Don’t disturb anyone. Let that remain. You should try to listen.

Two rats came and began to cut the branches from which he was hanging. In a minute or two the branches would be cut, and he would fall down. Inside is death. Outside of the well is death. In the meantime, he saw that a branch was coming towards his mouth. On that branch, so many bees were there collecting honey in a beehive. From that, a drop of honey, slowly dropped—one, two…. They were golden drops, very sweet drops were coming…one, two…. He saw this and could not check himself. He took his tongue and tasted one drop and exclaimed, “How sweet! How sweet!” But the rats were coming. In a moment he will go and die. Outside is death. Inside is death. If you shake the branch where the bees are making their rooms, they will come and attack. At once lakhs and lakhs of bees will come out and, in a minute or two you will die. So, in four ways, on every side of you… and all ten directions, death is waiting for you. But this taste is coming, “How sweet!” And then he is forgetting everything. What is this? You will have to die. Old age will come. If you are going by rail, car, or airplane, they can be smashed at any time and you can die at any time. There is no certainty what the next moment will be. In India, there are not so many [tragic] deaths. There were two airplanes, one from Arabia and the other from Russia. The planes crashed and all died. There was plenty of space to protect themselves. An airplane is not like a rail and car on the road. They had so much space, but they died. Not one of the riders escaped. All died.

Do you know earthquakes? Especially in this area, like Japan, Burma, Philippines, and when the earthquakes come, hundreds and hundreds of persons die. There is no certainty when you will die. But in this there is one drop of sweetness. “My wife is so beautiful. My husband is so beautiful. My children are so lovely.” If you have any job and in the evening return home feeling very tired, and your son or daughter comes onto your lap, you will think, “Oh how sweet.” You will forget all your labors. If your wife comes to you with a sweet voice, not an angry mood. Now we see so much angry mood. If all day he is doing so much hard labor, and he is so tired and he has just come home and if the wife says, “Oh you are tired. Take a glass of juice.” All these things are very sweet. The children will come and clap, “Oh father has come! Father has come!” Then he will forget everything. But death is everywhere. You should remember that there are so many problems. So Prahlada Maharaj advises us that we should not taste that one drop. Be careful. If you touch that drop of sweetness, you will let go of the [branches] with your hands and you will go….

What is the banyan tree? Our past karma. Our bad and good activities. It has come like a tree that we will have to taste both bad and good activities. You are bound to taste these. No one can check this. Only harinama can check this. The two branches represent good karma and bad karma, bad activities and good activities. Who are the rats? Day and night. Night is the dark rat and day is the white one. In night we make merry and drink so much with the family and enjoy with our wife and husbands and mostly sleeping. And in the day, we are working for nothing. This is living like dogs. We have seen dogs in India running so sweetly. If anyone asks the dog, “Where are you going? Where are you going?” The dog replies, “I am in a hurry.” Where does the dog go? He will go to a stone and he will pass some urine, smell it and again return. This is for nothing. So, we are like this. If you think very gravely and deeply about what to do about your family, know that when they will grow up to twenty-five or twenty-six years old, they will fly away with their wives [or husbands]. They will not care for you, for their father and mother. You can realize this. You may do things for your country. Our Indira Gandhi, our previous prime minister was trying to do things for the country, but someone shot her. Gandhi was a mahatma but he was murdered. He did not do anything for himself. He was not selfish. He did everything for others, but they shot him down. So, whatever you are doing will not give you happiness.

Try to earn something to escape your life so that your life will be easy. Not more. Otherwise, they might not protect you. So, listen to Prahlada Maharaj. What is he telling? From the beginning of your life you should chant and remember Krsna. You are saying, “When we grow and are old then we will take up chanting Krsna’s name,” but you have no time. We have no time to die, but death will not see that. In the mother’s womb, so many die. We see that children die and young strong twenty-four year olds also die. There is no certainty. So from the beginning of our life, we should chant and remember. Krsna is so merciful. One thing he told, “If suffering is coming. We don’t want suffering, but suffering comes anyway. We don’t want old age. When we become forty or fifty, some hairs begin to be white. We look in the mirror and try to pick it out. Then the next day instead of one, we see four or five more have come and again we try to take them out. Then the next week, several have come and we take some medicine [hair dye]. Anyhow our hair is going, our eyesight is going, and you cannot digest anything anymore. So many problems come. One day you will have to die. Without calling, sufferings, sorrows and problems are coming by your past impressions. In the same way, if you are meant to taste happiness then happiness will also come. Everything will come automatically. You should not worry for your meals, etc. We don’t do anything for our eating, clothing, going here and there.

Have faith in Krsna and chant in remember in Vrndavan with me. For a few minutes I will take you and you will go with me to lovely Vrndavan. Krsna is there. How is He there? How is He grazing the cows? Only for a few minutes and give you a glimpse. Let’s do one kirtan. Namami nanda-nandanam.

It has written about Vrndavan and Krsna where I want to invite you to go. A very pleasant land, beautiful Yamuna, full of pure water, flowing very gently. There are a lot of flowers, [her waters] are full of lotus flowers. A very good smell is coming. The bees become mad from that fragrance. They are humming (buzzing). But they are not humming. What are they doing? They are singing, “Radhe Radhe Radhe Radhe!” All are doing this. The peacocks are also doing. They are so beautiful. They see Krsna and think, “Oh a very black cloud has come.” They become so please and begin to dance. Cuckoos sing very sweetly. All kinds of flowers are in full blossom. Vrndavan was so beautiful. No stones or thorns there. It was covered with very green and soft grasses. Krsna took His lakhs and lakhs of cows. They are beautiful kamadhenu cows. Kamadhenu means?

Srila Gurudeva: What you want, when you want it, how much–they can give you. They are so sweet. Anything you desire, they can give. They have beautiful cows, very white, some black, some of red color. How beautiful is Krsna? His age is about fifteen or sixteen. He is entering into young age. That age is called kishor age. It is so beautiful. Krsna is so beautiful, having so many good qualities. His crooked eyes, three-folding body, and the sweet sound of His vamsi enchants everyone. He is with so many cows and so many friends like Dama, Sridam, Sudama, Vasudama, Stoka-Krsna, Lavanga, Arjun, Madhumangala, Bhadra, Subhadra, Mandalibhadra, Patibhadra—wonderful sakhas. Some are less in age and some are one or two years older. They were jumping and playing amongst themselves. Krsna especially is playing on the flute so sweetly. He is having a vanamala with five or seven colors of fragrant flowers—beli, cameli, juhi, jati, ruci, etc. Also, some tulasi manjaris are there. Do you know tulasi manjaris? They are the flowers of tulasi. Having so much madhu, bees are making honey. He has taken one flower, a karnika flower, that is a yellow long flower. I don’t know if you have seen or not. It is so beautiful. He has crooked eyes, beautiful shape. When laughing, it was as if nectar was coming out, smiling so beautifully and singing so many good things.

Yasoda Ma told, “My dear boy, my darling son, don’t go to graze. Thorns will be there and pinch You. You should take an umbrella and some shoes or sandals–anything.”

Krsna replied, “Cows are like my mother. They are honorable and worshipable, so if you can give sandals or shoes to each cow, and one or two umbrellas, then I will also use this.”

He was passing from one beautiful forest to another. Many beautiful flowers and trees were there. The mango trees were full of sweet mangos. There was so much jackfruit and all kinds of plantains and bananas, and all other fruits like pomegranate, grapes, etc. All the prominent fruits were there. There was also so much honey in that forest and therefore it is called Madhuvana. There is no trouble or problem for the cows. There are so many cows and green grass that they can easily take. There were no dangerous tigers and lions or mad elephants there. It was a very good environment.

The gopis are…kaun gopi? Which gopis? The gopis that are the same age as Krsna, from twelve to thirteen or fourteen years old. The gopis are very beautiful; more beautiful than Maha-Laksmi. Do you know Laksmi? She is the queen of Narayana. The gopis are more better and beautiful than the queens of Brahma and Sankara, having so many good qualities. They can control Krsna. They can take the mind and heart of Krsna, even though Krsna is the Supreme Personality of Godhead and He has so much power. Aisvarya – opulence. He has so much opulence, but by their loving affection, they used to control Him. When Krsna was going in the forest, all of the gopis gathered in their rooms and began to talk with each other. “O Krsna is in the forest, grazing the cows and playing the flute.” The gopis are sitting in their houses and they are telling each other, “How wonderful is Krsna to graze cows.”

Some of them said, “Why does Krsna go to graze? He is the son of a very rich person—Nanda Baba, who he is like a king. Why is He going to the forest to graze cows?”

Another gopi told, “He wants to play there with the boys and also He freely wants to meet with the gopis.”

Some others say, “We must go at once and look after Krsna and see how beautiful and sweet He is!”

If anyone sees Krsna only one time, He will take their heart and soul. He is so marvelous and beautiful. So we should go and see.

Another gopi warned, “You should not say this. Otherwise our mother-in-laws or husbands will hear and not allow us to go there. Don’t say these things. If Krsna will go away and we cannot see Krsna, what will we do? Let us go just now and see Krsna.”

Krsna is so beautiful and by His playing on the flute, deer come without any fear at all. The gopis say, “Just see how fortunate these deer are! The female deer come without any fear at all. They are looking at Krsna. What are they begging? Love and affection for Krsna. Also, their husbands are doing so. Their husbands are standing nearby and telling their wives, “Go on and look at Krsna. Don’t fear.” The gopis continued, “But our husbands are opposite to this. If we were deer, then freely we could see and serve Krsna.”

The gopis said, “When Krsna plays on the flute, that beautiful sound makes the Yamuna river stop. The current in the inner part of the river returns again [swirls]. With her hands and currents, Yamuna gives lotus flowers to the lotus feet of Krsna. We must go there. O sister. See sakhi! There are clouds on the head of Krsna always making an umbrella and pouring very beautiful and sweet waters, so Krsna would not have to bear the heat. They are like friends.” Everyone is pleased in that. These kinds of pastimes of Krsna grazing and playing…all of us being in Vrndavan is so pleasing. In Srimad-Bhagavatam so many things have been told and also in Caitanya-Caritamrta. So we want that should go forever there. We should not come here to take birth and death. How can this be? By chanting, by being in the association of a Vaisnava—it can easily be done.

Tomorrow, at about 10, we will leave this place and go to Australia. In the morning, we will go to the town. Some Indians have invited us. They know me. I will go there and in the evening at around 4 or 5 we will go to the airport and from there to Austrailia. We will be there for three weeks, preaching everywhere and after that we will go Bali, then again to Singapore, and from there we will return to India.

If I have spoken any harsh words, unpleasant words, try to excuse me for this. Remember me, and if you come to me in India, you are welcome there. I will give all kinds of facilities, but I cannot serve so much because I am a poor beggar, but I will try. We have done one Vrndavan parikrama this year, and again next year in Kartik month, at the end of October and the beginning of November, we will circumambulate Vrndavan. So, you are all invited there to try to develop your Krsna consciousness. This is the way of having eternal happiness.

All the lights in Jagannātha-Purī are turned off during the night of Nava-kalevara, when Parabrahma is transferred from the heart of one Jagannātha to the new Jagannātha. The Dayitās are also blindfolded before doing the ceremony. It is said that the opening in Jagannātha is two feet by two and a half feet. This is covered by many layers. When this cave in Jagannātha’s heart is opened, a brilliant light shines forth. Bhubaneśvarī resides within Subhadrā-devī. She is transferred to the new Subhadrā Deity by her appointed dayitā priest. Ananta-Vasudeva is within Baladeva Prabhu and He is transferred to the new Baladeva. Brahmā hid these Deities within the wooden Deities of Jagannātha, Baladeva, and Subhadrā. Therefore, Mahāprabhu would say, “You are not a Deity, You are directly Vrajendra-nandana.” Why? Kṛṣṇa is hiding inside Jagannātha. There no one will disturb Him and He can stay privately with Śrīmatī Rādhārānī and the Vrajavāsīs. The Gauḍīya Guru-varga, under guidance of Mahāprabhu, in the Svarūpa-rūpānuga-paramparā know these secrets and disclose them at the appropriate time.
