Niskincana-bhakti and the Importance of Sri Guru – Kuala Lumpur 01 Jan 1997

Srila Gurudeva: Yesterday we spoke about the teachings of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu given to Sri Sanatana Goswami. We should try to fix the goal with this guidance, these questions and answers. Then you will realize what Caitanya Mahaprabhu wanted to tell Sanatana. Before this it was hidden. I have a question. A man may be so rich, and his house is made of gold and diamonds, his wife is so beautiful and qualified and he himself is so generous and has such good qualities. He has beautiful and qualified sons and daughters. He has very good name and fame. If you are in this position, what is the use of doing bhajan amongst all of these things? So, I want to know the answer to this. Navin Krsna bramacari will answer this very shortly. (indicating to another devotee) You should also be ready….

[Audio cuts]

Srila Gurudeva: Navin Krsna Prabhu has explained what you should do whether you are rich, learned, having a beautiful body, having sons and daughters—everything. There is something I want to add, that I’ve heard. We are part and parcel of Krsna. Krsna is sat-cid-ananda. So if you have all the qualities, not all, but some of the qualities, only fifty qualities of Krsna can be present in the soul’s svarupa. Understand? Krsna is saktiman and anandamaya. The jivas are sakti and ananda, but not in full. Krsna is in full. You have very little, only like a sprinkle. The jiva is detached from Krsna, he has forgotten Krsna and has come into this world to try to experience so much pleasure. But in this world, we think these things will give us pleasure.

There was a penniless street beggar who received some donation from someone, then he will think he is so fortunate. Next day, that same person came again and asked, “So now are you okay?” The beggar replied, “I am okay, but I want that you should give me a lady to do service for me.”

“Yes.”

Again he came. “Are you satisfied?”

The beggar told, “No I Am not satisfied. I need a beautiful house with a garden.”

The man said, “I will do that.”

He again came and asked, “Are you satisfied?”

The beggar replied, “I am satisfied to some extent but not fully. I want a very beautiful girl to marry.”

The man said, “Yes I will arrange this.” And he thus managed.

They married and beautiful sons and daughters soon came.

Then again he asked, “Now are you satisfied?”

“Yes, to some extent, but I want a kingdom.”

“Yes I will give you.”

Then the man asked, “Now are you satisfied?”

“Now I want to rule over the whole world.”

He will never be satisfied. Never. He is the part and parcel of Krsna and Krsna has so much pure ananda, pleasure. He has nothing lacking. Internally He has everything. All what I told, and even to be a goddess from heaven, Brahmaloka, will not fulfill you.

I want to make you understand this by an example. You know that if you take a stone and throw it up it will go to the sky and then it will again come down afterwards. According to your power it will go so far, but it will go away for a very little time and then again it will come back. Why will it come? Now scientists are saying this is due to the Earth’s law of gravitation. Because the stone is part of the earth. Everything is from the earth. So they will come and stay on earth; they will not go from the earth. Take a drop of water. The water is part of the sea. If you take the water and pour it on the earth, it will go to the drain, and it will flow to the river, then the river will flow back to the sea. If it is not going there, if it is very little water, then it will evaporate through the air to the sky and become clouds, and again it will come as rain. So this water is part of the sea. We know that when a fire is burning, then sparks come. Why are they not going to the water or earth? Why are they going up? A balloon is also in the gravitation of Earth, but why does it not come back to earth? Because air is not part of earth. If you have an airtight rubber balloon it should go up. Why? It is a part of air so it will go to air.

Similarly, we are part and parcel of Krsna, the Supreme Godhead. We forgot Him, going here and there, as monkey, hogs, pigs, demigods, insects, women, and men and continually seeking all kinds of happiness, but feeling complete sadness in spite of this. Everyone is suffering. A man who is so rich. I have heard Rockefeller, who established a company, was so fat. He could not move. Six or seven persons were always there to help him. When he used to go to pass stool so many people were helping him. If he wanted to take a glass of juice, he could not digest it. There were always sixty doctors around him. What is the need of this? What kind of happiness is this? One day you must give up all these things and will certainly become old. In this world, there is no happiness. All happiness is in Krsna, the Supreme Godhead. Then we will begin to taste that rasa. Not anywhere else. Kamsa had so much knowledge and power, but he was always fearing.

In this world also. In India, we see rich persons are always fearing. So many guards are there. They cannot go anywhere. Is this happiness? We must serve Krsna and by His blessings we will gradually develop our bhakti and we will have the darshan of Krsna. [inaudible] If you want to be happy, have a peaceful life forever—not to be old, a child, having no disease, no problems at all—then you will have to do bhajan for Krsna. [unclear.] So, we should try to realize what is Krsna, what is bhakti and pray to achieve that by serving Krsna and Radha conjugal. Remember the essence of what I told.

[To a devotee] Ek kirtan.

Srila Gurudeva: In Kasi, Varanasi in India, at the bank of the Ganges, Caitainya Mahaprabhu was there and His new devotee, Sanatana Goswami had come. Sanatana Goswami wore hardly any cloth. It was all worn and torn. The owner of the house brought a new dhoti and cloth and he requested Sanatana Goswami and said, “You should take these and give up your old and torn clothes.” Sanatana Goswami said, “I don’t want your new clothes. If you have any old dhoti that you have worn, I will wear that. I don’t want a new one.” After that the devotee brought his own old dhoti. He torn it into two pieces. One piece was for bahir vasa, and the other part was dor kaupin.

This is akincana mood. This is renounced. If you are not becoming like this, bhakti cannot sit on the heart. If any worldly desire is present bhakti will come and go but not peacefully sit. Sukadeva, Narada Rsi, Mahaprabhu, Rupa Sanatana, all of these bhagavatas [they show the proper example of bhajana]. We have told this in class. So we should give up everything. Narada Muni with his previous impressions, he left all this world, his heart was pure. Bhakti will gladly come and sit in such a heart. [unclear.]

Once, a person came to Sanatana Goswami, a brahmana from Kasi came and said, “Sankara Mahadeva, Kasi-visvannatha has sent me to you for some wealth because I have my daughter wed and I don’t have anything.”

Sanatana Goswami said, “I have nothing. You can see.”

The brahman replied, “Sankara has told. That is why I am here. Sankara cannot speak a lie.”

Sanatana Goswami replied, “Certainly Sankara is a pure Vaisnava.”

At once he thought, “Oh when I was walking, doing parikrama of Vrindavan, I found a stone, that if you touch it to iron, it will become gold. I found it, but there was no need for it. I don’t want anything worldly, so it is useless for me.”

He threw it under the sand near the Yamuna. He had forgotten that he had it. When he remembered, Sanatana Goswami told, “Go to this place and dig in the sand and you will find there is something there.” He uncovered it in the sand and got a very beautiful stone.

Sanatana Goswami said, “Take this iron and touch it to the stone.” At once it became pure gold. The brahmana became so happy… The brahman headed at once to Kasi but on the way he thought, “That sadhu must have something of more value, so I should go back there.

He went back again and said, “I think there are so many jewels more than this. I want those jewels.”

Sanatana Goswami said, “You don’t want? Okay, throw it in the middle of the Yamuna.” When the brahman threw it in the water, then Sanatana Goswami said, “Go take bath in the Yamuna. You should always chant and sing Hare Krsna Hare Krsna Krsna Krsna Hare Hare Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare, and in some days you will have pure devotion to Krsna. Certainly, I am such a rich person by this prema. I am so wealthy because I have so much prema.”

If a man has no prema at all but everything you can want in this world here, he is very poor. Or anyone like Sankara and Sanatana Goswami have nothing but, they can do everything for the whole world.

Caitanya Mahaprabhu had nothing with Him when He was in the renounced order. Only dor kaupin—nothing else. So, this prema, devotion and love for Krsna is our svarupa sampatti. It is the wealth of our soul, our real wealth. So, if you are given the money of the whole world, what will you do? You will eat, sleep, etc. and in a second, in a moment you can die. So really wealth is prema, devotion. Caitanya Mahaprabhu had come to give this. I have also been directed by them, just as Swami Bhaktivedanta Swami Maharaj, known as Prabhupada in all countries. I have only come to give this wealth of prema. So, we should try until we reach, otherwise we will hanker and suffer always.

So Caitanya Mahaprabhu answered Sanatana Goswami’s first question with jivera svarupa haya, krsna nitya dasa. Who is the jiva? Who am I? I am not anything of this world. I am part and parcel of Krsna. Our svarupa, our vaibhava, our soul constitution is Krsna’s service. This is our wealth. If we think we are this thing (the body), then maya takes us and we become mad. By constitution, bhakti is here (in the heart) but when we give it up and forget Krsna then we become in maya and think that I am the wife of this person, I am the husband of anybody. This is my father, I am the owner of this. [With this idea], I think all life will be full of misery and false, quite false.

Krsna bhuli sei jiva anadi bahirmukha. I want to hear the translation that has been written by Swamiji. Loudly.

Symarani dasi: Translation. Forgetting Krsna, the living entity has been attracted by the external feature for time immemorial. Therefore, the illusory energy maya gives him all kinds of misery in his material existence. Purport. When the living entity forgets his constitutional position as an eternal servant of Krsna, he is immediately trapped by the illusory external energy. The living entity is originally part and parcel of Krsna and is therefore the superior energy of Krsna. He is endowed with inconceivable minute energy that works inconceivably within the body. However, the living entity, forgetting his position, is situated in material energy. He is called marginal energy and he is by nature spiritual, but by forgetfulness he is situated in material energy. Thus, he has the power to live either in matter or spirit and for this reason he is called marginal. He sometimes attracted to the illusory energy when he stays in a marginal position and this is the beginning of his material life. When he enters the material energy, he is subjected to three-fold time measurement—past, present and future. Past, present and future belong only to the material world. They do not exist in the spiritual world. The living entity is eternal and he existed before the creation of this material world. Unfortunately, he has forgotten his relationship with Krsna and his forgetfulness is described herein as anadi, which indicates that it has existed from time immemorial. One should understand that due to his desire to enjoy himself in competition with Krsna he comes to material existence.

Srila Gurudeva: So many good things are here. Everything is complete. We are part and parcels of Krsna. The nature of the jiva is to serve Krsna always. If you are part and parcel and serving Krsna in Goloka Vrndavan or Vaikuntha, how could we have fallen here? How did we come here? This is the question. Until you are really are serving Krsna then you are happy in this world. It is acceptable.

Those who go to Krsna and begin to serve, he cannot leave Him because Krsna is so attractive. He is so beautiful, so merciful, so sweet and fragrant. He is everything you like. Anyone who goes to Krsna, even Putana went to Krsna, and she wanted to kill Krsna with very powerful poison that she put on her breasts and went to Gokula in disguise as a very beautiful lady, a mother. Yasoda and Rohini Ma and all others were all there. She at once took the child Krsna. She said, “Oh I want to love Him, I want to give Him breast milk.” She wanted to kill Krsna with such powerful poison, but she came in the form of a mother and took him and said, “Oh what a beautiful son! It is not your son it is my son. You have you kept Him out of your womb? Why?” Yasoda and Rohini Ma looked at others that were there said, “We are not mothers. She is a mother.” They took Krsna and gave Him to Putana. She gave Him her breast and pumped it with one hand and the other hand was here.

Krsna closed His eyes thinking, “She has come in the shape of a mother. How can I kill her?” So He closed His eyes. She was caressing Him, showing so much affection but there was no affection at all. Krsna thought, “Oh you have come as a mother, you can be in this shape and I will certainly give you this mother mood and you will always be with Me—never separate.” So Krsna took her breast milk and her atma also. Krsna thought, “What to do?” He gave her a mother position and she never returned. If a demon goes to Krsna and never returns, how can someone who is serving Krsna so sweetly, how can he fall from that? So he has told marginal line, marginal energy. Never has he served Krsna or seen Krsna. His potency is like a seed potency, it is not bhakti. If you plant it in the earth, give it some water, some air, some sun rays will come, then it will begin to sprout. After that, the first two leaves will come, then flower and fruits will come each year.

Jivas are of two kinds. Understand? One is the liberated soul. They have never seen this world. They have not ever come under the control of maya. The other is we, the conditioned soul. We are suffering because we are not serving Krsna. By constitution you have the potency to serve Krsna. Prema, sneha mana—everything is there, but it is covered by maya. So we have this marginal position. You should know what is meaning of marginal potency. Then everything will be clear.

We cannot use the mind, speculation, logic, or argument to understand this. We cannot be doubtful. It will not help you in your Krsna Consciousness because Krsna is beyond all of these things. So we will have to accept a guru or any Vaisnava. This the first foundation. If you want to go to Krsna and serve and all potency should come out and you want real happiness, then you’ll have to see any qualified person.

tasmad gurum prapadyeta jijnasu sreya uttamam
sabde pare ca nisnatam brahmany upasamasrayam

Srila Rupa Goswami has told something about this. A man is chanting harinama, chanting sixteen or sixty-four rounds, he is worshipping Radha-Krsna, he is remembering the pastimes of Radha-Krsna and he is doing the nine limbs of bhakti—sravanam, kirtanam, visnuh smarana, pada-sevana, arcanam, vadanam, dasyam, sakhyam, atma-nivedanam—or the five types of bhakti. Do you know the five types of bhakti?

sadhu sanga nama kirtana bhagavata sravana
mathura vasa sri murtiya sraddhaya sevana

These are the prominent among the nine limbs of bhakti. And among these five, three are prominent: sravanam, kirtanam and smaranam. Hearing, chanting and remembering. Among them, kirtan is so much powerful, it has all the sixty-four kinds of bhakti, all nine-limbs—everything. But if you are chanting yourself sixteen rounds, worshipping Krsna and reading Caitanya Caritamrta and Bhagavatam, it is not sufficient. You must take initiation from a real qualified guru, otherwise he has no relation. It is like an [empty] husk, without a seed. Like a husk without grain. If you will take husks and put it in the machine, no grain will come. So, it is like this. It may be that in the next day or in your next birth you may have a qualified guru and then potency will come in name, in meditation, in chanting and doing bhajan. Otherwise it will not. Initiation is most essential. It is written there.

Like Ajamila. He went to Vaikuntha. He had no guru. He was chanting, but what became of it? He could not have any prema for Narayana, for Krsna. He could only be saved from death. Only that. He saw the arguments and talks between the Visnuduttas and the Yamaduttas; the messengers of Visnu and Yamaraj. By seeing the messengers, he had greed to serve Narayana. Then he left that place and went to Haridwar and among the sadhus and vaisnavas, he was discussing hari katha, reading, and he met a guru and began chanting “Narayana! Narayana!” Then the messengers of Visnu came and took him. So without guru, we cannot have this potency for Krsna. You can chant lakhs and lakhs of births without guru, but will achieve no ultimate success.

Ramananda Raya may have any guru but it has not been revealed. So many rsis did not have gurus but they have gone to Vaikuntha or to Krsna. There are two things. There are two kinds of impressions. If you have so many impressions in your past life, then you can come to this world in this birth and seek the real guru yourself. If there are no past impressions, then anyhow you cannot know who is guru and not guru, but Krsna is so merciful. Vaisnavas are going here and there. By accident, it seems like an accident, but it is not an accident. By past impressions, Krsna manifests for you to have a guru and by that guru, you will gradually come to the stage of sadhu-sanga, sraddha, nistha, ruci, asakti, bhava. Up to these stages of sadhana, and after that you will go to Krsna. It depends on the mercy of Gurudeva, by whom we have taken initiation.

[Audio cuts]

Srila Rupa Goswami has quoted here from Mahabharata. [unclear verse 47:10]

If anyone has not taken diksa, without initiation, all these subha karmas, all the pious activities of someone is without fruit.

[Audio cuts]

Sridhar Swami has told a verse. [unclear 48:40]

It has been told that no one is exempt from taking diksa initiation. Only these mantras are so powerful that if they touch the tongue at once they give fruits. Jiva Goswami is telling that it is true for whom. Those who have received guru that first they are qualified. Haridas did not just have any guru. His guru was Caitanya Mahaprabhu. Narada Muni has taken initiation from Brahma. Vyasa has taken from Narada and Sukadeva Goswami from Vyasa. And in this disciplic succession up until now it is going. So why will we not do? We should always try to follow these things. Otherwise we will fail in our ambition. If someone is opposite to Krsna consciousness any Vaisnava in Krsna consciousness or criticizing any Vaisnavas, do not hear this. It has been told here to give this up. I am not telling you to change your guru. But if you want to achieve Krsna prema, you will have to come into this line. Krsna arranges. He arranged Swamiji to come. He arranged Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarawati Goswami and Bhaktivinod Thakur. He arranged Swamiji to go all over the world. I give my blessings to all. You must try. I think that those who have received the mercy of him are all so fortunate. And those who are new and have come in this line, I think they have come by the mercy of reading his books. So we are all indebted to him. But we cannot say that he is the only guru and that after that there is no one and that I should not take a guru. This is not proper. If you are not managing to find Gurudeva then pray, “O Krsna be merciful to me! O Nityananda Prabhu! O Caitanaya Mahaprabhu! O Rupa Goswami! O Sanatana Goswami! You are so powerful. I pray at your lotus feet. Please manage this. Without this I will die!” I think they will all hear if we pray from the core of our heart. So they are bound to reciprocate.

Gaura Premanande Hari Haribol!

Five Kinds of Knowledge

Pratyakṣa—this knowledge refers to what we realize by our five kinds of senses and by what we see. This is pratyakṣa. But pratyakṣa is not helpful. It is not real. It is only the shadow; it is the perverted reflection of that aprākṛta (transcendental) world. It changes every minute. So, pratyakṣa means direct knowledge. Direct knowledge is not good. We cannot rely on this. If you rely on it then you will have to go in the chain of birth and death that has repeated sufferings and sorrows. So, Prabhupāda spoke of another form of knowledge. Do you know who Cārvāka is? He propagated the philosophy of eat, drink, and make merry. They say, “We have not seen God. There is no God...

Did Jiva Gosvami Meet Mahaprabhu?

In my childhood, Śrī Gaurāṅga Mahāprabhu visited the village of Rāmakeli and gave my two uncles shelter at His lotus feet. Since that time, when my tear-filled eyes first beheld the form of Śrī Gaura, this same form has appeared constantly within my heart...

Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu Meets Rāmānanda Rāya

In Śrī Saccidānanda Bhaktivinoda Ṭhākura’s Amṛta-pravāha-bhāṣya it is stated that the prema between them was natural. Actually, Śrī Rāmānanda Rāya is Viśākhā Sakhī in Śrī Kṛṣṇa’s pastimes. Therefore, as Śrīman Mahāprabhu is the combined form of Śrī Rādhā and Śrī Kṛṣṇa, the natural love of the Divine Couple for Viśākhā Sakhī, and the love of Viśākhā Sakhī for Them manifested immediately upon their seeing each other...

Full Siva Tattva – 03 July 1997

Common people generally don’t know anything, and so they thought that Ramesvara meant that Sankara is the God of Rama, and that Rama is controlled by Sankara. The demigods were of the opinion that Rama and Sankara are the same, and both are God. But Siva, Sankara himself, told them, “I am not the God of Rama. Rama is my beloved and my God.” Sankara is called Ramesvara because of this. He himself told this...

WHO IS PRABHODHANANDA SARASVATI? Why Did He Write "Sri Radha Rasa Sudha Nidhi"?

One who stays in Vṛndāvana engaged in bhajana under the guidance of sad-guru and Vaiṣṇavas will in time, upon becoming fully immersed in rasamayī-bhakti, have realization of this storehouse of divine nectar. When this nectar enters the heart, one can achieve svarūpa-siddhi and become qualified for direct kṛṣṇa-sevā. Kṛṣṇa will not accept us into His service until we have realization of vraja-rasa and vraja-bhakti and follow the footsteps of the Vraja-devīs. Prabodhānanda Sarasvatīpāda drank the nectar of vraja-rasa that was given to him by Mahāprabhu, and then reserved it for us in this book.
