HOW CAN SOMEONE WHO IS NOT A SADHU, RECOGNIZE WHO IS A SADHU?

In 1956 Srila Gurudeva returned to Mathura after Navadvīpa Parikramā and continued translating books alongside the publication of the monthly editions of the Śri Bhāgavata Patrikā. Acharya Kesarī stayed in Mathurā during this particular summer. On July 27 a mandate requiring anyone considered a sādhu to register before a government officer was brought to the Indian Lower House of Parliament—the Lok Sabhā. When Acharya Kesarī’s attention was drawn to the proposed legislation, he objected with a lion-like voice, “How can someone who is not a sādhu recognize a sādhu, what to speak of dispersing assessment? Only a sādhu can control another sādhu. The Indian Penal Code has ample regulations to suppress sinful behavior and activities opposed to society. What is the need for this separate law targeting sādhus?”
Acharya Kesari started a forceful campaign against the proposed mandate. He dictated a letter of protest as Gurudeva swiftly transcribed. It was printed in Hindi, Bengali, and English, and sent to prominent politicians, leaders of religious societies, members of parliament, and the President of India. As a result the Lok Sabhā quilcky rejected the proposal.
Also in the summer of 1956, the followers of the Nimbārka-sampradāya in Vṛndāvana cast aspersions on Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu in their journal, Sri Sudarśana, saying that He was a disciple of Keśava Kāśmīrī. In other editions, they insolently dared to claim that Gauḍīya Vaiṣṇava Acharya’s such as Śrīla Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhakura were in the Nimbārka-sampradāya. When Śrīla Gurudeva showed these editions to Acharya Kesarī, he became irate and had an essay published in the August issue of the Bhāgavata Patrikā entitled, “Sri Nimbāditya and Nimbārka are not the same person.”
In response to this essay, the directors of the Sudarśana journal announced that they were filing legal proceedings for libel. The Sudarśana editor wrote a long letter to Śrīla Gurudeva claiming that the
Bhāgavata Patrikā had presented false information about their sampradāya, saying, “Your article has caused immense damage to the reputation of our sampradāya and has seriously wounded the sentiments of its numerous followers. The value of such damage, although incalculable, has been estimated at 10,000 rupees.”
Śrīla Gurudeva showed the threat to Acharya Kesarī, and he replied firmly, “We will prove each and every word based on evidence from śāstra.” On August 27, 1956, Śrīla Gurudeva replied to Sree Brajbihari Saran at the Gautam Rii, Barahghat, Mathurā, writing:
Regret to inform you that a letter dated 23-8-56 (posted on 24-56) under a registered cover, addressed to Sree Tridaṇḍī Svāmī Śrīmat Bhaktivedānta Nārāyaṇa Mahārāja, designating him as Editor and Publisher of Bhāgavata Patrikā, is received under protest.
The addressee is not in any way guilty of or liable for any of the charges, criminal or civil, and does not admit any content of the letter as you have alleged. If you are wrongly, improperly, and illegally willing to enter into any litigation, you are at liberty to do so at your own risk.

Indignant, Brajbihari Saran of the Sudarśana journal contacted lawyers to start a legal battle. The lawyers warned him, “You don’t know Keśava Mahārāja and Nārāyaṇa Mahārāja. They never lose a case. Their knowledge of court proceedings and scripture is exceptional. Prosecuting them would be like a mouse going in a hole in search of an earthworm and finding a black snake that eats it instead.”
Cowed by what they heard, the Nimbārka leaders dropped the case and retracted their calumnies about the Gauḍiya-sampradāya.

“I know you will try,” Srila Gurudeva said, “but at last you will see: ‘Oh, zero.’ I know this. This world is controlled by Kala (time) and Kali-yuga. Kali-yuga will not give you permission to do all these good things. You will make a plan, and in a moment the result will be zero...”

Humility, the Heart, Bandhava – 16 June 1996

: Who will not die among you? Whoever thinks that they will not die should raise their hands. Will you die or not? You should realize that you are not this body. You are the soul within the body. You should understand this. You will have to leave this body behind. Therefore, you should chant Krsna’s names from your childhood, and then you will know what your soul is. Krsna is everywhere and He is so merciful. He especially likes children; He always plays with them. All the cowherd boys and all the gopis were with Krsna and they would always dance very beautifully. Your master danced so well; but he cannot dance like Krsna. Krsna dances so sweetly. If He dances, the clouds will come. If He dances with much spirit, then fire will come at once. Sometimes, when He smiles during dancing, then the whole world will be satisfied. He dances in such a way. One Krsna danced with sixteen thousand gopis. He danced so beautifully, sweetly, and swiftly that one Krsna simultaneously danced with sixteen thousand gopis. It seemed that Krsna was dancing with each and every gopi. Krsna did not become many; there was only one Krsna. But, He danced so swiftly that every gopi felt, “Krsna is only dancing with me.” But there was only one Krsna. It seemed that different forms of Krsna danced with all the gopis. How was this? If you take a firebrand and circle it, then it will seem that it is a ring of fire. So, Krsna was one and He was dancing so sweetly and marvellously. Sankara cannot dance like that; no one can dance like that. But the gopis can dance more sweetly and swiftly than even Krsna. Krsna is defeated there. Krsna can sing so sweetly, but Radha can sing more sweetly. Krsna will then remark, “Sadhu! Sadhu! Very good! Very good!” Krsna is powerful. If anyone folds their hands and prays to Krsna that, “You should be merciful to me, so that I can establish a relation and be engaged in Your service,” then birth, death, and old age will then be stopped. If anyone wants to be eternally young, if anyone doesn’t want to suffer and die, then that person should remember Krsna. There was a sadhu called Agastya. He did not have anything; he only had a small piece of cloth. He would chant Rama’s name on the banks of the ocean. A bird had some eggs that fell into the ocean. The ocean took these eggs deep inside its surface. The bird cried out, “Please return my eggs.” But the ocean didn’t listen. The bird went to Agastya Rsi and said, “The ocean has taken my eggs. He is not returning them.” Agastya Rsi came and told the ocean, “Oh brother, you should return the bird’s eggs. She is bitterly weeping for her children.” The ocean did not listen. Agastya Rsi then took a palmful of water and chanted Rama Rama. Then, all the water of the ocean entered Agastya Rsi and the ocean was now completely dry. ulta nama japata jaga jana valmiki paya brahma samana If a person chants, “Mara Mara,” then he will also be delivered. By chanting Bhagavan’s names once; by chanting Narayana, Krsna, and Rama, a conditioned soul will cross this bhava-sagara. All you little children don’t understand this. But your parents understand the glories of the holy name. You don’t understand that this world is a place of misery. But this world is filled with sorrow and thorns. You don’t realize that this world is full of miseries, sufferings, ego, lust, and everything else. But a day will come when you will have to weep if you are not chanting Krsna’s names. So, from the beginning chant Hare Krsna. All of you repeat after me. Chant, “Hare Krsna Hare Krsna Krsna Krsna Hare Hare, Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare.” The children should especially chant loudly. Don’t forget these names. At least chant these names once in your house. When you have taken a bath and are going to school, then chant the Hare Krsna Mahamantra once and then go out of your house. By chanting only once, you will see how beautiful your life is. There will be no more miseries. Crossing this material world, all of you will be with Krsna in Goloka-Vaikuntha. Everyone should chant Krsna’s names, if they want to be happy. No money is spent in chanting these names. A poor man, a rich man, the big, the small, while sleeping, while walking—the holy names can be chanted by anyone at any time. Your auspiciousness is then assured.
